The best recorded performance of this much misunderstood symphony is Boult's mono recoding from the early 50's. A close second and in great sound is this from the wonderful Vernon Handley. Anyone who thinks this is a work of easy, serene pastoralism forgets this symphony was dedicated to Sibelius. Handley makes no such mistake and finds the moving, restless quality of Vaughan William's masterpiece. At bargain price, this is a showcase in the performance of British orchestral music.

The Tallis Fantasia was always going to be tough to beat, and indeed this recording doesn't...but it comes mighty close. Having first heard an extract from it via the, 'Life Story of V.W.' on the T.V. some months ago, I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. It's a delight from start to finish. Very English and with the very, V.W. depiction of rolling hills and green countryside to the fore. Highly recommended.
