"Music written for oneself--like a diary not for publication": Alexei Lubimov's description of the 10 short pieces which constitute Der Bote is exact, in that none of them was taken seriously by their composers. But by putting them together, this eclectic Russian pianist makes the listener take them very seriously indeed. The collection's title--taken from a piece by Valentin Silvestrov--means "the messenger", and the general message is one of rapt meditation. On life and its conclusion, on the approach of oblivion: more than one of these pieces closely adumbrated its own composer's death. We begin with a majestic Fantasia by CPE Bach, written in his last year, and suggesting a promenade round the monuments of a lifetimes' creation; the ensuing pieces hang together like a string of pearls. There are surprises: Bartók and John Cage (in Oriental-contemplative mode) both sound more like Debussy than Debussy here does himself, with a two-minute work called Elegie! ; Liszt comes in austere-visionary guise, and Chopin at his most harmonically mysterious. But the biggest surprise is the way these pieces, which span 300 years of composition, seem so contemporaneous. The parting shot is another work from arch-modernist Silvestrov, doodling exquisitely in Mozartian style. --Michael Church
