In selecting material for ECMs
:rarum anthology series, which is programmed by the artists, the surviving members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago may have had trouble finding or fitting representative pieces. One song is from a 1981 solo effort by the late trumpeter Lester Bowie, another from a 1997 album by saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. The sole track from the Art Ensembles terrific double live album
Urban Bushmen (1980) seems to have been chosen for its brevity. But if this single-disc collection doesnt make the most convincing argument for the strength and consistency of the legendary avant-gardists during their sometimes underrated stay with ECM, two cuts from
Full Force (1980) open and close the case for their power and reach: Bowies pungent, propulsive, plunger-muting "Charlie M" and bassist Malachi Favors nearly 20-minute long, phase-shifting "Magg Zelma", which ranges from percussive walls of sound to heated horn solos. This label was the first to properly record the Art Ensemble. That achievement is enhanced by ECMs first foray into 24-bit/96khz remasterings. --

Album Description
More than 30 musicians closely associated with ECM over a long period were invited to participate in the
rarum anthology project. One major difference between
rarum and other jazz samplers is the musicians' active participation at every step of the way: choosing and sequencing material, writing liner notes, often supplying photos from private collections.
The arrival of the Art Ensemble of Chicago at ECM in 1978 was widely regarded as a major event in the jazz world, and their recordings over the next half-dozen years would bear out this judgement, as the group's innovative music was matched by Manfred Eicher's innovative production. The AEC's rarum collection features selections from Nice Guys, Full Force, Urban Bushmen and The Third Decade, as well as related recordings by Lester Bowie and by Roscoe Mitchell's prize-winning Note Factory band. In their brief CD booklet statement, Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors Maghostus and Don Moye speak of good times with the label and look forward to the release of their recently-recorded tribute to Lester Bowie. After a longer hiatus, the ECM/Art Ensemble relationship continues...
