Gardiner's account is strongly characterised. Sylvia McNair sings beautifully and with plenty of emotion and counter tenor Derek Ragin also sings beautifully. Indeed all the singing is first rate. The work itself is perhaps a bit of a specialist's feast and I have found it hard to decide what I think of it. It is interesting and stimulating and certainly has an important place in musical history. But I am not entirely sure that it is something I will return to for pleasure and sheer love of the piece. There is drama aplenty and the range of moods is impressive. But somehow I don't find the music as memorable as many, perhaps lesser, pieces.

If you want to explore this repertoire or if you already know that you want an account of this work there is no need to hesitate.
