4.0 out of 5 stars Koussevitzky's Beethoven Choral, 13 Jan 2008
By Phillip Sorensen (Poole, Dorset, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This cheap CD of this symphony on the German Archipel label is a valuable addition to the Koussevitzky Beethoven symphony repertoire on CD (albeit without the Boston Symphony rehearsal of the first movement available on another label). Although the finale is sung in French (which sounds very odd at first) and there are a few technical problems with side joins from the old 78s and changes of pitch, particularly near the end, there is no getting away from the power of this conductor in Beethoven. To my ears this is better than Furtwaengler with his very slow tempi and quasi-mystical approach or Karajan's smoothed out lines in the pursuit of beauty of sound. Purchasers of this Ninth are recommended to Koussevitzky's 'Eroica' and Fifth Symphony with the LPO on Biddulph from the 1930s (this Fifth is also in the 'Great Conductors' series) and to the even better Fifth and Egmont on LP with the conductor's Boston Symphony Orchestra on RCA from the 1940s. This Egmont is similar in impact to the extract filmed with Koussevitzky at Tanglewood. My cousin has transferred this LP to CD for me! There is also a marvellous Pastoral with the Boston orchestra recorded in 1928 on a deleted Biddulph. Given that there are also recordings of the Second and Eighth symphonies in circulation (Pearl or the boxed set 'Maestro Rissoluto' in the case of the Eighth only) it appears that we are only now waiting for a Fourth and a Seventh and there must be tapes of these from performances of the Boston Symphony Orchestra!!
