Synopsis
MAN TROUBLE, the fifth collaboration between Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson, is a comical thriller. Nicholson plays Harry Bliss, who runs a guard dog service and is going through counselling with his wife, Adele(Lauren Tom). A serial killer is on the loose in Los Angeles, and when the apartment of classical singer Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin) is ransacked and she starts receiving threatening phone messages, Joan moves into the Hollywood Hills home of her sister, Andy (Beverly D'Angelo). However, Joan doesn't feel safe there either, because she's harassed by Andy's ex-lovers. So Joan hires a guard dog from Harry's company, and soon Harry is providing more than protection for the beautiful singer.
Harry is a natural-born liar who, because of his profession, feels that he lives by a code of honor--even if he can't quite explain it--and Nicholson plays him with comic exasperation, as one thing after another spins out of his control. The usually tough-looking Barkin is soft and vulnerable, as she is badgered by her conductor husband, harassed by unknown callers, menaced by men from her sister's past, and "helped" by Harry. Harry Dean Stanton and Saul Rubinek provide fine support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing plot for Jack Nicholson, 22 Oct 2004
By Jacques COULARDEAU "A soul doctor, so to say" (OLLIERGUES France) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Jack Nicholson is equal to himself in this film but the subject and the plot does not give him a lot of possibilities to reveal his talent. This meeting of a marginal man in society with an opera singer could have really proposed the exploration of two rich worlds that have little in common. The meeting argument being security and watchdogs it is casual and the subsequent love affair is purely accidental. Yet it is fiery and disturbed by an ex-husband and a very frustrated wife. But the film avoids any kind of depth. It remains superficial and purely anecdotal. It is a sort of fairy tale in the modern world. No discovery of the opera milieu and no discovery of the world of quasi-failing men. And what's more, the opera world is reduced to a Mass by Johan Sebastian Bach, which is not exactly an opera. It is sometimes funny, but only funny ah ah, though it could have been funny strange. A let down in other words for such an actor who must have had some pressing bills to pay at the time of the shooting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny comedy but not one of the best, 8 May 2002
By Irena Pasvinter (Rishon-LeZion Israel) - See all my reviews
"Man Trouble" suffers from poor and mediocre script and even Jack Nicholson (who is great as always) can not rescue this film.
There are many funny scenes in this comedy but
in spite of this it leaves impression of disappointment.
The quality and features of the DVD
correspond to it's price - image quality is OK,
there is only stereo sound, no subtitles, no bonuses except theatrical trailer.
