Amazon.co.uk Review

Stargate SG-1 is the TV spin-off from the 1994 big-screen movie. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible.

Episodes on this DVD:"Red Sky". A picturesque location shoot and a questioning of faiths distinguishes this episode. After an unavoidable accident initiates a global catastrophe on planet K'Tau, Sam forces Jack and the others to decide between technology or primitive faith. Naturally, Daniel is for the latter, and ultimately the show stands tall by leaving its resolution up to the interpretation of the viewer.

"The Rite of Passage". Some Stargate guest stars just don't get a break. Cassandra, the poor little girl turned into a human bomb four years ago ("Singularity") is now a teenager experiencing a far more problematic "Rite of Passage" than she deserves. Infected with a secretly dormant retro-virus, she also seems to be seeing a ghostly form no one else can see. And for once, there's an opportunity for Dr Fraiser to do more than jab needles too!

"Beast of Burden". An interesting mix of the movie Enemy Mine and the Biblical tale of Daniel and the Lion. Here it's Daniel Jackson who had previously befriended the Unas "Beast" Chaka (Dion Johnstone) in "The First Ones". There's an agreeable political stance taken on slave labour and animal captivity too, aided enormously by the star calibre cameo of Larry Drake.

"The Tomb". Paired up with their on/off adversaries the Russians(!), SG-1 enjoys a spot of Indiana Jonesing around "The Tomb". Throw in a little Alien-style hunt and seek with an unseen predator, and you have a terrific movie mish-mash in which Jack manages an all-time high in sarcastic barbs. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Keeps Getting Better, 20 Jun 2002
By Pete Grigg (Leicester) - See all my reviews
I dont know what it is with Stargate, but it keeps getting better.
Most sci-fi shows whether they are farscape or startrek or whatever, always have periods where they go a bit iffy, and then they pull it back or they get cut, But with stargate, it is the only show that has consistently been good, or even gotten better,

This DVD is great much like all of them
I cant recommend this enough,
Go buy it now, The episodes are great, Amanda Tapping is gorgeous as usual, Jack O'neil is as funny as ever, and even t'eal has his funny moments.

I hope Stargate never ends, especially if it stays at this quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars VOL.21 Another treat for STARGATE SG1 FANS, 19 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This is the next 4 episodes of the hugely popular and exciting series of Stargate SG1. If you're a fan (like me) this dvd is a must for your collection. Not only are the episodes great...THE TOMB is a dark and edge-of-your-seat episode with the team trapped in a tomb with 'something' in there with them.Chills! RED SKY-SG1 accidently causes the inevitable destruction of an Asgard protected planet and have to do everything in their power to prevent it.BEAST OF BURDEN-Remember Chaka? The unas that kidnapped Daniel Jackson,(in THE FIRST ONES)?Well the tide turned in this episode when Dr Jackson ,and the team, have to rescue Chaka from slave traders who are very reluctant to give him up.RITE OF PASSAGE-An episode with the return of another character,Cassandra(first series). She's now a teenager and has started to display very odd behaviour along with a fever which Doctor Frasier cannot break.SG1 has to return to Cassandras home world to find answers before it's too late only to find that the teenagers fate lies in the most unlikeliest of hands!!! .....The extra delights on the dvd are great too.AMANDA TAPPING with a camcorder giving the fans an insight behind the scenes with some personal touches ie.Michael Shanks 'trying'to juggle tomatoes and loads more. And, of course, all the episodes are repeated ,complete with audio commentries, which is facinating to listen to.To finish it off we are treated to a preview of what's to come on vol.22.Watched it ,loved it ,gonna watch it again!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 13 Jun 2002
By Torri (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
Not the best DVD of the excellent Stargate SG-1 series by far, although there were some nice moments.

"Rites of Passage" is a good opportunity to show what Teryl Rothery as Doctor Janet Frasier can do - why hasn't she got a credit?!? It's great to see her do something other than harrass SG-1 with post-mission physicals. Frasier is one of the best reaccuring characters on the show, and this is just an example of why she should be given more to do.

The other three episodes: "Red Sky," "Beast of Burden" and "The Tomb" are all good episodes, but nothing exceptional.

Perhaps the best feature of the DVD is Amanda Tapping's fantastic video diary, which really gives you an insight into what it is like behind the scenes there. The DVD is almost worth it just for that (and seeing Janet hold a gun on a Goa'uld in "RoP")
