Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The TypeAway Keyboard for Palm PDA Handhelds is designed specifically for anyone with a Palm that has the Universal Connector--so it will function with the m1XX series and the m5XX series. For a long time there has only been one real option for the PDA owner wanting to use an external keyboard that can accommodate the touch-typist--The Stowaway keyboard from Targus. Logitech has decided to enter the fray with this alternative.

When not in use the TypeAway folds down to a lightweight object slightly larger than a Palm m5XX PDA, and is encased in a hard shell. Open it out and you have a keyboard that is nearly the same size as that of a standard laptop computer--most of the individual keys are certainly comparable in size, with just a few made smaller. A stand flips out at an angle of about 45 degrees when you open the case, and holds your Palm firmly in place.

There is a row of keys above the QWERTY row that is slightly smaller than the rest. These double as the number keys and application shortcut buttons--a Function key allows access to the latter as well as to various other Palm features such as find, menu, and even Graffiti keystroke entry which double up on other keys.

The TypeAway certainly allows for faster data entry than Graffiti. The keys have an excellent responsive feel to them, and the fact that the keyboard has a solid base (which forms its case when closed), means you can open it out onto a folder or case that sits on your lap if absolutely necessary and work. However the gap of about 2cm in the middle of the keyboard, which accommodates the hinge, thwarted my attempts to touch-type at speed for quite a while: the space bar is split in two across this gap which also took a little getting used to. Persevere, though, and the TypeAway becomes a very usable option indeed. --Sandra Vogel

Its innovative design features a built-in-cradle: no batteries or cable are required. 5.0 out of 5 stars Make the most of your Palm, 24 Sep 2002
If, like me, you want to use your Palm to enter a lot of text, you'll quickly tire of Graffiti (no matter how good you are) and end up under-using your Palm. The TypeAway keyboard (like other handheld keyboards I'm sure) will allow you to get the most out of your handheld. You can type just about as comfortably as you would on a laptop (although you need a surface of sorts: it wouldn't work on your lap, as it would fold!), and there is very little lag in response. I can now write pages and pages on the train! It seems well built and solid, although on my unit the latch that keeps it folded doesn't seem too secure. The unit looks very sharp with its metal covers and, once opened, is a full-sized keyboard (except for the numerical keys, which are vertically challenged a bit). Overall, then: it works well, seems solid, is well designed, looks good, and is relatively cheap compared to other offerings. I'm glad I bought it and I'm happy to recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but..., 9 Jun 2003
Logitech TypeAway Keyboard is all you may expect from a foldable, portable keyboard for your Palm device. It is light (I always carry it with me in my jacket's pocket), effective (keys size and separation are adeccuate) and beautiful (at least, compared to its cousin from Palm). I use it for taking notes on-the-fly in working meetings, writing e-mails on the move whilst travelling, and even for PocketC programming (THAT is comfortable, believe me).

What is then the "but..."?. Well, I recently upgraded to a Palm Zire 71, which is quite similar to Palm Tungsten as it shares Palm OS5, high-res screen and digital sound. Since I only had drivers for Palm OS4, I downloaded the correct drivers from the Logitech webpage and installed them into my Palm. Palm Zire (and Tungsten as I could read out in some other places over the Internet) won't hot-sync anymore. Overmore, the keyboard will not work at all. Seeking the Internet for information regarding this issue, it seems that Logitech is taking quite a long time to deliver a formal, non-beta version of its driver for Tungsten and Zire 71, specially compared to its counterpart from Palm, which released the correct driver inmediately. So, before acquiring this product, if you own one of these devices make sure Logitech has launched a non-beta driver, otherwise, forget it.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good..., 5 Nov 2002
Having trawled the web for reviews, comparisons, mini-keyboards, ppk, etc. I ordered the TypeAway primarily for it's size. Little more than an inch taller than my m505, and the same width and thickness, it is ideal for slipping into a pocket and having laptop capabilities anywhere.

I'm impressed with the key travel, the configurability (you can add a further 12 apps to Command keys in addition to the built-in 8). In fact the hardware side and basic editing/navigation are great.

What wasn't so good for me was the responsiveness when navigating a document in WordToGo - slow to say the least. Also, other than Wordsmith, the TypeAway's keyboard driver is limited in the capabilities for menu, pick-list and other such navigation. I'd recommend installing LapTopHack if you have the time to learn and RAM.

It's less than half the weight of the Palm Portable Keyboard (the old one not the new XT). Also, if I open it out and place it over the top of my ThinkPad T21 keyboard then it just about covers all the keys except the top 2 rows of function keys.

It's good...

The keyboard looks ideal, but unfortunately it is not compatible with my Palm TX. I'd recommend getting a wireless one instead.
