Can trucks deliver the thrills of cars?, 1 Jul 2002
Right. Lets race. I'll choose a Honda GP bike, and you can choose any vehicle you like. What do you choose? An all out F1 car? A Road slaying Viper? Perhaps a Lotus? Well how about a truck? Exactly. Y'see, all of the above have all been featured in PS2 games so far, so has Jester Interactive done enough to their truck racing game to make you choose it over the all the other exotic vehicles out there?Well, they've had a jolly good go at it. Supertrucks is an arcade style racer, with bags of trucks, licenced brand names, all the usual stuff that goes into racers nowadays. On top of that, there is also everything you'd expect in the options department. Single race, Championship, arcade, 2 player and so on. Nothing new, but all you expect to be there is there. And then the camera swoops down the home straight, over the trucks and then right into the cab for the rolling start, then you have control. Bloody hell, this thing handles like a truck! Precisely. The thing about this is, is that trucks are not F1 cars or Vipers, they are trucks. They are very heavy, handle like barges, brake with a complete lack of passion and generally very sluggish, and it shows in the game. They chug about the track making a lot of noise and not a lot else. It's accurate, definately, but it's not a Viper. So it's a shame that Supertrucks went down the arcade route. With a simulation game the trucks could have worked - Fettling with the hardware, repairing the damage in race (which happens a lot, and credit to the game for it), but as an arcader trucks just do not deliver the thrills that a race-bred car does. If you like your arcade racers fast and furious, then look elsewhere, but if you're a trucker, or you're looking for a new challenge, then you might just find it here. It is a great game, under those trucks!
