SWGB is a variant of the Command & Conquer stategic point and click game. You will instantly recognise the formula of resource gathering, building construction, and unit production and control. But what really raises this game above others in the genre is its complete realisation of the Star Wars universe. Not only does the game use Phantom Menace characters and settings but it also embraces the original trilogy. Through the standard campaign mode (which is excellent) you'll soon be commanding AT-ATs and other favourites in recreations like the Battle of Hoth, or the Endor Moon for example. The graphics are excellent for their scale, but what really cranks up the atmosphere are the exact speech and sound effect samples from the films. Coupled with the awesome scores from the films as a background soundtrack SWGB is a feast for the ears and eyes. Its also worth mentioning that the specialist units of the various factions, along with some guest appearances, make for a finely balanced game whereby you must play to your factions strengths. And by far the best feature is the ability to create advanced Jedi and Sith units which are fearsome in battle and gain the ability to turn opposing units and buildings! Add to all this the game's custom campaign and scenario editor, online gaming (Gameranger) option, and random game generator and the package is tremendous value. If I had to draw any negatives from the game, the interface is ideally suited for PCs, not Macs in that the one button mouse needs to be supplemented with keyboard controls to accomodate the interface based around two- button mice. Some of the scenarios also seem to have an irregular difficulty curve but these are only minor gripes. Overall the game is excellent and I'm looking forward to the forthcoming Attack of the Clones Add-on package.
