Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Kodak DX4900 builds on the success of the EasyShare range, bringing 4.0 megapixels and a whisper-quiet 2x optical zoom in an easy to use and extremely affordable package.

The DX4900 is essentially an update to the successful 3 megapixel DX3900 with a new 4.0 megapixel CCD capable of producing good quality prints up to 50x75cm poster size. Indeed the camera was named best point-and-shoot digital camera in its price range at the 2002 Photo Marketing Association Awards. This award was based on colour accuracy and image and print quality. This is important because the EasyShare range of digital cameras, while not among the prettiest available, perform extremely well against the competition and at the same time offer extraordinary ease of use.

The DX4900 is in fact as easy to use as a compact film camera. To start taking pictures is simply a question of loading the flash card and the battery and setting the date and time. From there on, the camera will operate in "Auto" mode and take well exposed pictures with excellent colour balance in most situations. Should the need arise, the camera can be set to override the ISO settings from 100 to 400, shutter speeds from 0.7 to 16 seconds, sharpness, metering, resolution from 1 to 4 megapixels, colour settings, white balance, and exposure compensation from -2 to +2 in 0.5 EV steps. Despite the ability to set these, we feel that this camera makes such a good job of image capture in the "Auto" mode that you will rarely have to alter these settings. Another new feature on the DX4900 is the "Advanced Digital Zoom" which claims improved performance, reducing pixellation. Limited testing showed that the combination of realtime interpolation combined with modest image sharpening does improve the appearance of pictures taken using the digital zoom.

The camera itself has a mechanical combined power switch and lens cover, a mode dial to switch between capture, review and setup, a menu navigation joypad, and buttons to control flash settings, close up modes and the self timer. What was missing from the package is of course the EasyShare docking station. Kodak has done this to make its cameras even more competitive but at the expense of usability. Remember that the camera is supplied with a non-rechargeable Li Ion battery that will prove costly to replace. You can use a couple of AA batteries, but again they will have to be either expensive Li Ion or rechargeable NiMH. The best bet is to invest in the docking station which is supplied with a NiMH rechargeable battery and an AC power adaptor.

The software supplied with the DX4900 includes USB connection software, album creation software, image transfer software and Kodak Picture Software. The transfer software runs in the background and starts up whenever the camera is detected and then guides you through transferring your images. Once an image is transferred, you are passed over to the Picture Software which allows you to view your images and apply simple image enhancements, e-mail them and organise images in an album.

The camera is supplied with wriststrap, Kodak Picture software, CD ROM user manual, USB and video cables, lithium battery, insert for optional dock and a 16MB CompactFlash card.--Nick Baxter

5.0 out of 5 stars Kodak DX4900, 10 Sep 2002
A friend of mine had recently bought a top of the range Fuji camera and the quality of images taken led me to start shopping aroud for a replacement to my aging digital camera.

As good as my friend's camera is the advanced features hardly get used and he found himself wishing he had got something simpler but with the same image quality. With this in mind I began scouring all the reviews I could find and the Kodak Dx4900 with it's 4 mega pixel image and easy to use operation came out on top.

It is simplicity itself to use and the optional easydock system makes it easy for other members of the family to use the camera and play with images as well.

The pictures I have taken so far have been excellent. A couple of indoors shots were slihjtly fuzzy but by reading the manual and accessing the advanced features for different ISO settings, exposure compensation, focusing modes you soon find the flexibility is still there to take difficult pictures.

The camera is normal looking, not sexy but practical. It also surives a few knocks - I dropped mine from waist height after only a few days - eek - but the camera only suffered a slight scratch on a corner, still works superbly.

The camera lens is protected by a sliding metal cover when not in use which is both practical and quite fun when switching on :)

In use you can use either the viewfinder or the mini screen. The viewfinder is great and by not using the screen saves on the battery usage.

The camera only comes with Kodak normal batteries and either a rapid charger with rechargeables or the Easydock system should be bought to save money. The Easydock system is not particulalry expensive when you consider ease of use and the fact that it has a recharger and the rechargeable batteries included.

The Kodak software is ok for getting up and running but does not allow you to view / edit images other than within it's fixed size window. I suggest a separate package such as Paintshop pro or Adobe Photoshop if your patience and budget are up to it.

The quality of prints is again excellent both when output on the Epson 950 in A4 or when professionally printed - even poster size does well when a clear photo has been taken.

I recommed having a look at the samples taken from the camera on the Kodak web site it really does give a good feel for what the camera is capable of.

If you want good images, flexible features but a simple to use camera then I strongly recommend this.

Praise goes to Amazon too who despatched everything very quickly and their on line price was the lowest I could find. Even E bay refurbs were going for more !

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Camera at a fantastic price, 9 Nov 2002
By Matt (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
...It comes with 16Meg card, but this will only give you 11 top quality photos .. do a google on CompactFlash and get a 64Meg card for another 20 quid (about 56 photos)

From all the above reviews the only thing that put me off was reading about the image storage time - But, I've found you CAN take pictures in quick succession (3 to 4 seconds between each) and it will buffer them .. it's only if you're in a hurry to turn the unit off that you notice the delay whilst it saves everything to the card.

The LCD menus are well laid out & easy to navigate (and read).

If you're even a bit computer literate, don't worry about the docking station - once the software is installed just plug in your camera, turn it on, and the software does the rest (as if you were using the docking station in the first place). The only extra flexibility a docking station gives you is charging without fiddling with batteries and tidier cables on your desk.

Fun can be had straight out of the box, but there are plenty of features to play around with should you want to ... buy one now ! The wife will understand ... eventually

5.0 out of 5 stars The cheapest 4.0MP digital camera available!, 12 Jun 2002
By Mr. J. M. Roberts (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Kodak Easyshare DX4900 was named best point-and-shoot digital camera in its price range at the 2002 Photo Marketing Association annual international convention and trade show - the largest industry event of the year! It certainly lives up to this by delivering a stunning 4.0MP (2448 by 1632) resolution - it is the top of the Kodak Easyshare range. Definitely worth purchasing a Kodak 128MB compact flash card with it, as you will only get about 20 photos on the supplied 16MB card. You will also need a suitable case to protect the camera. It is also advisable to purchase some high capacity (1700mAh) rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, as a non-rechargeable lithium battery is all that is supplied. It is certainly worth paying the little extra and getting the DX4900 compared to the 3.0MP DX3900. The DX4900 is not supplied with a docking station (like the DX3900) but anyone considering buying a digital camera in the first place will have sufficient computing skills to do without! The camera appears as another drive in 'My Computer' and you access files like from a floppy disk or CD. The docking station is supplied with a rechargeable Ni-MH battery pack (2 AA batteries) and acts as a charger, but you can get a separate charger and 4 Ni-MH AA batteries for a third of the price of the docking station. Images are saved in jpeg format only and the image aspect ratio is set at 3:2 - like a 6 by 4 photo. The only improvement would have been to increase the optical zoom, as it is only 2 times maximum. However, doing so adds weight and further expense to the camera. After hours of research on the internet, Amazon.co.uk are offering the best deal for the Kodak DX4900 in the UK and you shouldn't hesitate to buy it.
