This disc is a genuine bargain, giving you the chance to enjoy the voice of one of the most gifted sopranos of the 20th century. The recording quality is surprisingly decent, considering that some of these extracts are 80 years old. All of Ponselle's greatest attributes are here: her amazingly ability to float the most exquisite notes, the remarkable depth and richness of her lowest register and the dramatic intensity of her singing. For me the highlights are i) 'Ernani, Ernani, involvami' (just listen to those incredibly secure trills and the agility of the coloratura ii) the 'tomb scene' from 'Aida' with Martinelli and iii) a genuinely moving rendition of 'Piangea Cantando' from 'Othello'. The accompanying notes are informative too. All in all, a most attractive disc. At such a low price, and with such tremendous performances on offer, why hesitate?
