Product Description

Product Description

The Sony DSC-P5 is a sophisticated digital camera that sets new standards in compact, elegant, and stylish design that were inconceivable just a short while ago. Small, lightweight and handy, with one of the most advanced feature sets currently available, these are the attributes many photographers desire in a camera for all occasions. With dimensions of 112.5 mm long, 53.8 mm tall and 36.2 mm deep, the DSC-P5 is almost 20 per cent smaller than its predecessor, the DSC-P1. An elegant and robust magnesium body belies a feather light 185g weight.

Harnessing the latest Sony design and digital image technology advances, the DSC-P5 provides the user with comprehensive, easy-to-use shooting facilities. Equipped with an effective 3.2 Megapixels, the Super-HAD CCD is supported by a new 14-bit A/D converter. The refined signal processing enhances the dynamic range and reveals even greater detail. Compared with the DSC-P1, the DSC-P5 possesses a number of refinements and new features. Burst Mode gives users the option to take two consecutive shots in a rapid succession. The Autofocus function is aided by AF illuminator technology, so that even poor light conditions are not a problem. You are ensured of capturing sharply focused images regardless of the light situation. As for a range of exposure scenarios, the photographer can select the ISO setting manually (ISO100-ISO400).

The camera provides users with the ability to capture moving as well as still images. Short films can be shot using the camera's MPEG EX (EXtended) function. The film is stored on Sony's Memory Stick. For super close-ups the DSC-P5 has a 3x optical zoom, which is supplemented by a 6x digital precision zoom. This configuration gives rise to an optical focal length of 39-117 mm, and enables the camera to cover large distances easily. So that you do not lose sight of the small things in life, the Autofocus operates from a distance of 10 cm with the aid of the macro function.

Thanks to the optical viewfinder and 1.5-inch colour LCD, photographers cannot miss their subjects. Advanced flash facilities make the subject brighter if necessary, typically used in order to prevent the red-eye effect. The camera also disposes of various automatic programs and setting options for white balance. Ease of use was a primary concern of the design engineers. The DSC-P5 employs a new design control dial on the top of the camera for fast and easy image shooting.

The new camera's power consumption is lower than that of its predecessor. The new and smaller InfoLITHIUM battery, the NP-FC10, provides the camera with sufficient energy for up to 90 minutes or 1,800 pictures with the LCD switched off. A major source of space savings and enabler of this new camera's striking slimline design, the battery harnesses the latest developments in Sony's Stamina battery technology.

Besides the 8 MB Memory Stick, the DSC-P5 is supplied with an InfoLITHIUM battery, AV and USB cable, and a software pack age for Windows and Mac environments (MGI PhotoSuite, MGI VideoWaveSE, USB driver).

Manufacturer's Description

The Sony DSC-P5 is the smaller, lighter and sleeker successor to the hugely popular DSC-P1. With its 3.2 effective megapixel Super HAD CCD, 14 bit DXP processing and 3x optical zoom, the DSC-P5 delivers superb image quality. A number of unique features also get you the right results, even in difficult conditions: the AF Illuminator, for example, achieves perfect focus in poor light. When you want to, you can take creative control, by adjusting the ISO setting or selecting one of 4 picture effects. You can also record your own movies with a choice of two MPEG modes--MPEG EX for long-running movies, and MPEG HQ for high quality, 15 second clips. Or use Clipmotion to string together a series of still images--ideal for a Web banner, or an e-mail to friends. So that you can keep doing it again and again, Sony's Stamina technology delivers unbeatable power durability. And of course, with the DSC-P5 you join the Memory Stick family of products: use your Memory Stick to transfer images, movies, music, spreadsheets, text, etc between your camera, camcorder, PC, PDA, Walkman, mobile phone, printer, dictation machine, the list just keeps growing.

5.0 out of 5 stars First impression Sony DSC-P5, 3 Nov 2001
Whether to be used as point-to-shoot or make more sophisticated pictures, this camera won't dissapoint you. The picture quality is perfect without colour or geometrical distortion.
The user interface is well thought of and is very easy to learn for everybody.
The transfer of pictures to the computer is very easy too. The included driver software enables the camera to be used as an additional disk, allowing free transfer of information, even back to the camera!
The mpeg facility allows clips to be recorded.
The camera is very small, yet good to handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brill!!, 23 April 2002
Just bought this camera the other day and it does exactly what it says on the box. The pictures are fantastic and thankfully Amazon included a 64mb card with it (the 8mb card ran of space after half an hour! - You cant help snapping those pictures).

The camera has all the features you could want - a timer - four different effects (black and white, old fashioned brown picture, negative images and solarize!) - you can zoom in on any part of your picture (even once its taken). You can even pass the picture through your TV so everyone can see what you are looking at (great for a family photo when you put the timer on!)

Taking pictures in the dark is amazing (having never seen this function before) the picture comes out as if it were daytime? Although trying to find the subject through the infra-red viewer is difficult.

If you have the money buy this I cant fault it. Yet!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Impressive, 14 Feb 2002
By Colin Main (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have used 35mm and APS cameras before and always found them a compromise of sorts (camera size or picure quality).
This camera is small enough to fit in my DJ pocket and produces good enough quality photos to beat many 35mm cameras.

I showed it to a professional photographer recently who has a digital camera costing ~£2,500 and he was *very* impressed - almost to the point of being envious!

The only thing I have done is upgrade from the 8Mb flash that came with it to a 64Mb one - able to hold about 40 *very* high quality photos, or nearly 1,000 low quality ones.

The only thing stopping me putting a 5 star rating is not so much the battery life, which is about what I would expect, but the cost of a spare battery. The cheapest I have been quoted is £45.

Even so, I would strongly recommend this camera.
