If the idea of taking your payroll functions in-house is a scary one, be reassured by the number 8 in the name of Instant Payroll 8. UK financial software supplier Sage has been providing solutions for small UK companies for a long time now, and this is just the latest refinement of an already top-notch package.
It covers every payroll function for businesses of 10 staff or fewer. You can run salaries weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly, by calendar month or (if you're a masochist) as a mix of each. It will hold your employee records, perform Income Tax and NI calculations, handle statutory sick and maternity pay, print pay-slips and cheques for your staff, deal with pension contributions and produce P45s, P60s and other statutory forms. It can even take care of at-source Student Loan deductions. The software has also been validated as meeting the payroll standards demanded by the Inland Revenue.
No matter how you're running your payroll at present Instant Payroll 8 can hardly help but improve matters. If you're doing things on paper in-house the run will become simpler and tidier, there will be fewer mistakes and everything will be in one place. If you're using an outside company at present Instant Payroll 8 will probably pay for itself in a month.
One note of caution: try a month's dummy run first, alongside your existing system. Sage's statement that even those without prior experience "can run their payroll quickly, easily and accurately" seems reasonable, but do a dry run and you'll be secure in the knowledge that everyone is going to get paid on time. --John Rennie
