Product Description

One of Tanaka's underlings has stolen a rare statuette that he had planned to use as a peace offering between the local Yakusa and Chinese Tong. He hires two private investigators to exchange ransom money to recover the statuette, but the trade goes down bad and Clay Roth is killed. This angers Roth's brothers and father, all combat veterans, and they go after the people responsible.

Having chosen this week to become a better person, lo and behold I (re)stumble into this whacked out doozy from prolific schlock-meister Fred Olen Ray (whose long list of credits I won't bore you with, but lets just say he's not gonna worry Steven Spielberg anytime soon). Locked within the dark recesses of my warped mind, this puppy has sat there waiting for one day to be savoured once again. Today is that day.

Ultra macho combat veterans the Roth family (David Carradine as son Jim and a slumming Lee Van Cleef as dad Burt) become the target of yakuza mob boss Akira Tenaka (Mako) after coming into possession of a stolen jade statue. However, 'ol Tenaka has seriously underestimated what on the surface, looks like a bunch of middle aged drunks and before long he's eating his words and being handed a new one when the Roth family turn this situation on its head in an alcohol fuelled orgy of machine gun spraying, magnum force pumping and snappy one liner spouting fury. The movie is another in a long cycle of direct to video fodder existing only as a cure for insomnia, but dammit - it truly is a lot of fun: On what is clearly a limited budget you get a gnarly Van Cleef spouting venomous lines of angry dialogue as if he were chewing on glass or paid by the expletive, a crazed up Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) looking like he's clearly sick of playing looney villains and a lethargic Carradine doing his best action hero impersonation. Director Fred Olen Ray keeps things moving (well, somewhere) and for such a low budget, does get a lot bang for his buck.Read more ›

I really like this movie its great fun, a low budget yet action packed adventure directed by Fred Olen Ray who did many small budget movies throughout the 80's and the 90's including Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers! Many of his movies were cheesy sleazy horrors and sci-fi with blood and nudity, this is his attempt at an action movie and I think it plays out pretty well, the story is basically set in the seedy underworld of Los Angeles Chinatown, a yakuza boss has a priceless statue stolen which he will do anything to get back, but they mess with the wrong family! The cast is great' David Carradine is a cool lead and the rest of the support cast is good, a few familiar faces pop up for small roles like Michael Berryman (hills have eyes) Laurene Landon (Maniac Cop 1-2) and others, there is plenty of action in the way of shoot-outs and explosions etc all on a low but decent budget, if you love these classic cheesy low rent movies then make sure you get this one especially as you can pick it up so cheap!!

DVD has an average picture quality (Prism leisure)
