Arise, Sir Gary Brooker, 1 Jan 2006
The classic Procol Harum line-up included, of course, Robin Trower, BJ Wilson on drums, Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher and assorted bass players, among them Chris Copping. Well, at least we have Gary and Matthew here with some really excellent players to create a Procol-ish sound. The band play a long and well considered set of some of their greatest songs and one is reminded once again that this is a band that recorded a great wealth of diverse and clever material. Play "Whisky Train" to the unknowing and they usually reckon it's Motorhead or Gary Moore! The sound quality is quite exceptional and so is the picture. Also, the not-so-young Mr Brooker passes what my son calls the "Salty Dog" vocal test - can he reach the drawn-out high note at the end ? Yes, he can and does. Magnificent! Eat your heart out, Chris Martin - no frail falsettos allowed into this company! This is an great way to spend an hour and a half in the company of top-flight players. With dear old Tom Jones recently knighted apparently for having merely survived, with no obvious sign of having produced a new song or an original note in his life, Gary Brooker (and wordsmith Keith Reid) deserve knighthoods for 40 years in music and examples like these of majestic and original songs. Excellent value for money. Buy now, light the fire, open a good bottle and remind yourself that no, it wasn't all just a glorious but disappeared dream. They are still out there, if you seek them out, still doing it. You know what I mean - but if not, clue: Ginger ---- Jack ----- Eric ----.................
