Synopsis

In this intelligent and extremely black comedy, Edith (Sabine Azema) and Paul (Andre Dussollier) are the parents of a 28-year-old PhD candidate called Tanguy (Eric Berger). A master of Chinese and Japanese language, culture, and history, Tanguy teaches classes at the university, receives highly respected research grants, and has an excellent way of communicating with people. He is graceful, reserved, expressive, and altogether a delightful young man. The only problem is that he still lives at home, and treats it like a hotel, with no plans to move out. Edith and Paul are well-to-do professionals who treat their son with respect and kindness, but their patience is wearing thin. Unable to confront him about the idea that they wish he'd move on, they concoct a hilarious plan to sour his experience of living at home.
Director Etienne Chatiliez (TATIE DANIELLE) presents this excellent comedy, which balances an outrageous script with impeccable performances from Azema and Dussollier as overly polite parents who just want their little poulet (an incredibly ironic Berger) to fly the coup.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tanguy - an excellent French comedy, 25 Mar 2005
"Tanguy" is a 28 year old college lecturer... still living with his parents.

The film focuses on his parents' increasingly desperate attempts to get their son to (literally) move on. You can't blame them - Tanguy treats their flat like a hotel and causes no end of sleep depravation for his parents by frequently bringing home "company"... well, you get the idea.

The revenge tactics employed by his parents are hilarious, and range from the deliciously petty to the strangely dark.
There are too many to list here, and in anycase, this is one of those comedic gems that just begs for you to discover it by yourself.

The cast are all superb - Tanguy's emotional shallowness makes it rather easy for you enjoy seeing his parents get their own back.

A snappy script is thankfully unhampered by the subtitling - in fact I'd say subtitles work much better in this case, dubbing would have lost half the comedy.

Overall, a fantasically enjoyable film.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have teenagers YOU must watch- As could aid trouble before it sets in!, 13 Jun 2008
Tanguy is an excellent well written/directed film.

This film is Hilarious, After watching it myself ,I rushed online to get a copy sent to my(20yrs younger)Little Sis as warning as she had plans to live back at home when she had finished her studies at Oxford!
Eeekkk I thought-she gonna turn into a Tanguy...and knowing our Father it would take less time for him to resort to the escapades Tanguy's parents were forced into.

The synopsis given by amazon say all you need to know with out spoiling the film.

Not only very funny but helpful for anyone with teenagers(a good warning) & to those who plan to have children.....

If you are already in his parents situation it will help to make you release you are not alone and will give you great tips on how to get your birds to fly the nest..hehe

A MUST for anyone planning on living in France that has children (or parents), NO matter there age..gives a fantastic insight into French Law...YOU will be shocked to discover what You are legally bound to do..regardless of others behaviour....eekkk- and I am not joking- which makes this film even funnier as it can & does happen....the Law in the UK make life much easier than you think.

This really is an Excellent film, don't let the subtitles put you off, they are well written and if you are not used to watching films with them you will not be disappointed if you use the 'pause' button occasionally - it will not effect the enjoyment one little bit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Staying in the nest, 16 Jun 2009
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Tanguy was a huge it in France but never travelled to the English-speaking world. It's a slow starter, but once the film hits its stride it's often very funny, with Andre Dussolier and Sabine Azema's attempts to get their 28-year-old son to leave home escalating from childish pranks to make his life Hell to legal action (with the judge helpfully providing Dussolier with the name of some hoods to beat up the lad). Not great and a little overlong, but it is very entertaining.

Extras are limited to a stills gallery and a couple of trailers, but the DVD offers a decent widescreen transfer.
