1.0 out of 5 stars best and worst, 3 Nov 2008
By the fender strat cat "paulo" (llandrindod wells powys) - See all my reviews
SAHB were at their best live and "Live" is a defining moment of the 1970s. Live is a huge step forward in the experiance of a live record with good album tracks becoming classic live music. You will not find a bad moment on this record. Penthouse Tapes has its moments but though it is played and produced well the material is not the strongest. Live 5 out of 5, Penthouse tapes 2.5 out of 5. Overall rating i have pressed 1 star but should be four.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best and worse in one package, 5 Nov 2005
By Klaus Nrskov (Copenhagen Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is really the strangest match. SAHB live is to my mind among the best live-recordings ever. So why not go for more live-tracks (I'm sure theres plenty of tapes to pick from)instead of mixing it up with probably SAHB's most insignificant release.
Anyway - this liverecording all the way from Faith Healer to Framed is like attending the concert ... like beeing right there in Hammersmith ... the playing is strong and imperfect like any true liverecording before they mess it up in the studios. The mixing is perfect and the balance between instruments and between music and concerthall is just perfect - like almost no other live-record I know. This is sheer energy and much than most of SAHB's studio-releases. I never liked Delilah much, but apart from that, perfect and well worth five stars.
Then they had to pair this gem with Penthous Tapes wich is like placing a spider on a birthday-cake. Apart from beeing released approximately at the same time, the two releases have absolutely nothing in common. PT is a number of weak self-penned tracks and some covers of which Crazy Horses and Schools Out are kind of funny but thats about it. Is this really the only way to get your hands on the live-record?? What a blatant piece of record-company cynicism.
If this is in fact the only way ... well I'm sorry ... you just have to go and buy it anyway, because this is rock-history ... simple as that.
And by the way: while you're at it get "Rock Drill as well. If they absolutely had to pair the live-recording to another of the later releases, Rock Drill would have been a far better choice. It is a much, much stronger release altogether while still not quite accepted by the true Alex-afficionados. I find that strange.
Rock Drill to my mind should be rated among the best of SAHB's records - and the last of Alex Harvey as far as I know, which in it self makes it an interesting final milestone of one of rocks truly great sons. Give my Compliments to the Chef!

3.0 out of 5 stars SAHB peak and begin their decline., 19 May 2002
By A Customer
That's 4 for the live album and 2 for The Penthouse Tapes. Undoubtedly at their best live, its hard to believe that Harvey was in his forties when Live was recorded. The track selection here cannot be argued with, though its disappointing that full use has not been made of the CD format to include extra tracks, as has been done with the Costello reissues for example. The Penthouse tapes was released a mere 6 months after Live amidst rumours of record company pressure. It certainly bears all the hallmarks of being rushed, with weak original compositions being padded out with some curious cover versions. As this LP was released, punk rock was sharpening its teeth, and bar one more hit single, it was more or less the end for SAHB.
