Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Before Half-life, before Quake, even before Doom, there was Wolfenstein 3-D, a title that kicked PC gaming right into the 90s. Bam!'s Game Boy Advance conversion is pretty much exactly the same as the seminal PC shooter, and old-skool purists will be weeping tears of pure nostalgia when they see Wolf's brick walls, turquoise doors and decidedly politically incorrect swastika flags and Hitler portraits.

For the uninitiated, the game is a maze-set first-person shooter with 60-odd levels, four weapons and four difficulty levels; the aim of the game is to wipe out Castle Wolfenstein's Nazi henchmen and make your escape. The controls are dead simple--turn with the D-pad, strafe with the shoulder buttons, shoot with A, open doors with B, change weapons with Select.

The graphics and sound seem basic when compared to most of the GBA's other titles, but the gameplay's as good as it ever was; mowing down Nazis--and their dogs--then collecting their treasure and finding secret stashes of loot and health packs. They may not be the most cerebral of pursuits, but it's undeniably good fun.

The only real downside is the lack of mid-level checkpoints--having to start the level from scratch each time you die can be very irritating. But perhaps the most lasting impression you'll take away from Wolfenstein 3-D is a sense of wonder that PC games have evolved so far technically in just 10 years--just what will we be playing on our handhelds in 2012? --Rikki Price

Product Description
The year is 1943. You are William "BJ" Blazkowicz, the Allies' bad boy of espionage. Your mission is to infiltrate the Nazi fortress and find the plans for Operation Eisenfaust, the Nazis' blueprint for building the perfect army. Captured in the attempt, you're taken to their prison where you await execution. However, you know where the plans are kept, and the Allies will face a great defeat if you don't escape and risk the horrors of the prison known as Wolfenstein. Playing as an escaped prisoner in a Nazi war prison, you will move smoothly through a 3D world full of Nazi guards, snarling canines, and rooms packed with Nazi treasure. With 60 action-packed levels full of secret passages and hidden rooms, Wolfenstein 3D will appeal to audiences from the novice to the experienced. Note: this is a rare 18-rated GBA game, and is not appropriate for those under 18.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but a little repetitive, 25 Jun 2002
By A Customer
It's perhaps unfair to compare this game to the likes of Doom and Quake, it was the 1st ever game of it's kind and this can be seen at times - gameplay is rather simplistic, run around shooting all that you can and finding the lift to the next level each time. This can become dull, but the playability will have you coming back time and time again, it's a good blast when you're bored. I bought it for the nostalgia value alone but am still steadily working my way through it - If you are looking for a game representative of this genre I'd recommend looking at Doom, as the coridoors in Wolfenstein are all identical and this makes it very hard to find your way around or know where you've been! (I end up navigating by remembering where I've left corpses dotted around)

In summary, it's a very fun game - but there are better unless you are swayed by the nostalgia value. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars the grand father of the first person shooter genre, 4 April 2006
it begins as a game, it continues as a legend, it created the first person shooter genre, at the time it was released in 1991, it was a revolution. No one had seen anything like this in gaming before, to todays standards, it's not that great compared to halo or doom 3 (the doom franchise was made by id software who also made this game), but it is an incredible, playable and enjoyable game for the primitive game boy (there are much more hight tech hand held consoles these days), i nearly bought a psp but instead i ordered wolfenstein 3d, and doom 1 and 2, thses games have incredible graphics and game play, it prevented me from buying a psp, it's all i need and for it's price it's a bargian. The levels are brightly coloured so you don't have to move your self into the light when playing this game (most games you play you can't see on the screen because), the sound effects have been digitaly remasterd brining a new depth into the game, the game is uncut with all the classic levels filled with dark secerets, vast ranges of weapons, a well trained army of nazis, and castle wolfenstein lost treasures. The game is not too difucult, but occasionly you mught have low health and walk into a room and get shot from behind and not know how you died, it's furstrating but you have to live with it. there are a large range of enemys for a 1991 game, they're reguler german nazi gaurds, SS troopers, vicsios canines, mutated zombies from the twisted experiments of the evil dr. Schabbs...they have three arms!!!, nazi officers and the powerful SS leaders, these green fighting machines are almost invincible, they take alot of bullets to take them down. The game is allittle confusing as the rooms are sometoimes identical, as another reviewer of this item said, you will have to remember where the corpses are. Good luck, get out there and blow the brains out of those zombies.

2.0 out of 5 stars The GBA versions missing out, 25 April 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Although this may be one of the first fps made this feels a bit dated. The GBA controls don't suit the game as it's hard to turn the camera. The GBA version is also missing out on the game's music by only offering sound effects. If you have an ipod touch or iphone you might want download it for that rather than buy the GBA version.
