2.0 out of 5 stars possibly the least scary film I have ever seen, 9 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This is possibly the least scary film I have ever seen. It borders on being a parody of itself with its tired plot and some of the worst acting in modern times. That is a bit harsh as it isn't all bad, but those are the features that struck me about it most. It was almost painful to watch the characters try and grieve over the deaths of their friends and the two repetitive pre-murder scenes had me rolling my eyes more than a little.

To be fair it does have some redeeming features such as a few small suprises and the fact that it is only 95 minutes long but the only horror is the fact that Lisa, played by Kate Elliott, is still alive at the end of it; the killer also reveals himself as a bit laughable towards the conclusion as he begins talking in third person and generally being a stereotypical axe-wielding maniac.

Deputy Henley is a slight comic relief although the constant gum chewing is very irritating, as is the parallel between him and the incompetant police man played by David Arquette in the scream trilogy. I think they tried too hard to make him the archetypal American deputy and i half expected him to pull out a doughnut. The similarity between a certain event that occurs to Deputy Henley and one of Craig Parker's more prominent film roles in 'The Lord of the Rings' is quite unnerving but I don't want to spoil the film for you; I'll leave the people who made it to do that instead.

It isn't the worst film I have ever seen, compared to some it positively glows, but my warning is to take it with a pinch of salt; the makers of any all-american murder story filmed in New Zealand must have some sense of humour so don't take it too seriously. I'm not entirely sure what rating suits the film but I decided on a 2 when taking it in context of its genre and remembering the fact that I am slightly biased regarding Craig Parker. It may not be scary or well-acted but it is entertaining nonetheless.

I wouldn't advise that anyone bought it with the hope of being scared witless but its an unusual alternative to 'Scream' or 'I know what you did last summer' if you are into that sort of thing and prepared to over-look the clichés. It is quite fun to watch but seeing it more than once would probably get boring.
