Amazon.co.uk Review

Since first hooking up in the early 1990s, The X-Press 2 trio of DJs Rocky, Diesel & Ashley Beedle have been responsible for some of the biggest club hits of our times yet Muzikizum is their debut long-player. Both "Muzik X-Press" and "London X-Press" (released on the Junior Boys Own label) were two of the greatest house records of the 90s, while 2001's "AC/DC" and "Muzikizum" may yet be talked about in similar terms.

It's this track history that makes their debut album so enticing for fans of quality house music. While it isn't the greatest-thing-since-sliced-bread opus we'd anticipated, it is certainly a very fine house album--and very fine house albums are notoriously hard to make. Wisely, the trio have chosen to supplement their greatest adrenaline-pumping moments--the New York meets Brighton prog-funk of "Muzikizum" and "Smoke Machine"--with a variety of deeper, techier and more uplifting cuts. So, we get the poppy "Call That Love" (featuring Basement Jaxx/Fila Brazillia vocalist Steve Edwards), the spacey "Angel" and the old skool piano rush of closer "The Ending". It's all solid, goodtime stuff, but there's little here to match the pop genius of David Byrne collaboration "Lazy" easily the album's stand-out moment. As a result, Muzikizum is merely a good album, rather than a great one.--Matt Anniss

4.0 out of 5 stars funky house for the summer (when it arrives), 29 April 2002
By A Customer
After I heard the single 'Lazy' I thought I'd give the album a whirl. And its pretty good too, providing a chilled funky house ambience, and sounding a bit retro to boot. The aforementioned single stands out, though, as the most likely chart material, but that is no bad thing, as the rest of the album does not sound too 'commercial'.
The title track, Muzikizum, starts the album off well, sounding clean and crisp, with the album progressing through the housed-up Mr.Byrne, through the old skool rave-esque Smoke machine, to the other vocal collaborations of I want you back and Call that love. The album finishes on a high with more funky house in the form of The ending.

All in all a very listenable album, nothing really new but a job well done. If you like your house light, frothy and ideal for summer listening, you can't go wrong!

4.0 out of 5 stars Somehow sounds both retro and modern at the same time, 27 May 2002
The eagerly awaited, by me anyway, full album debut of X-press 2 has not disappointed at all. Despite some of the criticism that this is not an entirely original album I feel it is simply misunderstood.
Much like Les Rythmes Digitales 'Darkdancer' album I think 'Muzikizum' has been deliberately made to sound like it is from another era. What 'Darkdancer' is to 80's pop 'Muzikizum' is to 90's house. Not that I feel it sounds dated, far from it, it simply celebrates a different point in dance music culture while still sounding fresh and modern.
The highlights of this album are, without doubt, the insanely catchy 'Lazy' featuring David Byrne of the Talking Heads and the dark and broody 'AC/DC'. The latter of these two sounds too good to be true over clubs speakers and no dj should be with out it.
No self-respecting fan of dance music should be without this album. It's lived up to my expectations and that's no mean feat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great house album, 4 May 2002
By A Customer
I was a little disappointed with some of the press reaction to this album. Okay, so it doesn't exactly push the envelope of house music but it does have some great tracks on it. Dancefloor friendly cuts like Smoke Machine and AC/DC sit well alongside the ultimate slacker's tune, Lazy and the sublimely chilled Palenque.
With the current trend towards 'old skool' compilations and 'dance classics' albums it's good to see at least someone still knows how to do house properly. Nice one.
