This group are still so underrated, no thanks to the awful 1986 hit version of 'Pretty In Pink', and some rather embarrassing TV performances around that time. On this album and the follow up 'Talk Talk Talk', The Furs appeared the epitome of cool with their dark clothing and shades, professing a love for The Velvets and the New York punk scene.
Opening the album is the stunning 'India' which starts off with slow, shimmering guitar, the calm before a mighty storm of cascading drums, and Butler's snarling, rasping vocals, a hybrid of Bowie and John Lydon at his most venomous. This leads into the outstanding 'Sister Europe', which slivers away into a wonderful chorus and seedy saxophone. On Side two there is no let up in the quality with my favourite track being 'Blacks' seguing into 'Radio', listen to this, and it's difficult to think of many other bands from this period who sound so energised.
Shame about what happened later, writer's block, and various band members leaving halted their progress. But this album, 'Talk Talk Talk', and all the early singles are the best way to hear post-punk sounds and attitude. Definately on the 'Pulse'.

Before they went all MOR and safe on us, the Furs managed to explode onto the canvas a la Pollock, casting colours and sound into the ether. Where many bands became parodies of punk, Richard Butler provided the intelligent alternative - articulate and visceral. From the opening intensity of India through to the Stooges-style Flowers this album is a timeless classic. The Furs would not have existed without the Velvets and the Mary Chain would not have existed without the Furs.

I remember being at a Furs gig,the night that CBS decided to sign them. CBS's accountant (such are the vagaries of record companies) had the final say and asked me what I thought. I told him that if CBS did indeed sign the Psychedelic Furs, it would be the best band they had ever signed.

25 years on I think the Psychedelic Furs WAS the best band ever signed by CBS/Epic/Sony (perhaps alongside The Mahavishnu Orchestra!)and this is their finest hour, by a country mile.

The album still sounds cool and contemporary. If you don't already own this buy it or live forever in musical nerdom.
