Product Description

CD Description

Best known for her association with the Beatles, Cilla Black was a coat check girl in Liverpool's hipper clubs in the early 1960s before she was discovered by the Beatles' managerBrian Epstein and signed to EMI by the Beatles' producer George Martin. Black's first album, titled simply CILLA, is filled with the blue-eyed British soul for which she's known. That debut is paired here in a two-fer with Black's third album, CILLA SINGS A RAINBOW. Black suggests, especially on these early sides, a less confident Dusty Springfield, but herSwinging London take on tunes by Burt Bacharach, Kern-Hammerstein, and Lennon & McCartney make for a fun time capsule as well as an enjoyable listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Cilla at her finest!, 9 Mar 2002
By Neal Dzik "SeattleRio" (Seattle, Wa USA) - See all my reviews

Finally EMI has the good sense to start re-issuing Cilla's studio albums for her legion of fans who are tired of the compilation packages.
What a way to start than with her classic debut album 'Cilla' and her highest charting album 'Cilla Sings A Rainbow'. Cilla show's why she must be remembered in pop history as one of the finest vocalists to emerge from England. These albums show her as soulful, dramatic and stunning. Just listen to 'Dancing in the Streets', 'Sing A Rainbow' or 'Everything I Touch Turns to Tears'.
Hopefully EMI will realize the demand for these albums and follow suit with her other back catalogue albums like 'It Makes Me Feel Good' and 'In My Life'.
This is a must for any Cilla fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, but with a deadly cut, 6 May 2002
By Ian Yule "ianyule" (Dunbar) - See all my reviews

Like other reviewers here we can only rejoice and get excited about the release of Cilla's back catalogue. This release is the most exciting thing for Cilla fans since "The Essential Cilla Black" was released.

Two "buts" though. Firstly, why mono when there are stereo versions available on vinyl and secondly what moron decided to fade out the dramatic end of "(There's)No place to hide." ? This is one of my favourite tracks and I couldn't believe it when the fabulous "darling, darling, darling" conclusion simply faded out. It's the only fade on the whole album - why?

All the same get out there and buy it and let's hope for the whole catalogue like Petula's and Dusty's will become available.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Release !, 5 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The release of this CD finally marks the re-issue on CD of Cilla Black's original Parlophone/EMI Music releases. This has to be a must for any lover of sixties music. These are two of Cilla's finest albums, included is her debut 'Cilla' which when released in 1965 reaching #5 in the U.K and the follow-up 'Cilla Sings a Rainbow' which peaked at #4.

Stunning would understate what are two beautiful albums feating the diva at her most soulful and dramatic. Cilla is the biggest selling British female artist from the sixties and this is her legacy uncovered in digitally remastered glory.
