Amazon.co.uk Review
While you may not be familiar with the original Dead or Alive--a run-of-the-mill fighting game most famous for the bouncing breasts of its female combatants--the sequel Dead or Alive 2 is a major-league contender that ranks up there with genre giants (including Soul Calibur and the Tekken series).

Dead or Alive 2 features drop-dead gorgeous visuals, with gracefully animated 3-D characters rendered in great (and in some cases, downright naughty) detail. Not merely scenic backdrops, the lavish 3-D arenas are also highly interactive: fighters get slammed and thrown against walls, and in some cases they can be thrown through windows and off ledges, with the camera viewpoint following the aggressor as he or she jumps down to the lower level of the arena to continue the punishment.

A game that plays as good as it looks, Dead or Alive 2 sports a rich combat system that is heavy on the counterattacks. Gameplay moves along at a blazingly fast pace, and the simple controls are easy to pick up on and make executing combo moves a breeze; this is a brawler that both button-mashers and hardcore gamers will enjoy.

Unlike other fighting games which contain hidden features that must be unlocked, Dead or Alive 2 pretty much lays all its cards out on the table from the start. There are 12 fighters to choose from (each with at least one alternate costume) and seven modes of play available (including tag battle mode and a two-on-two battle royal that up to four players can join). --Joe Hon

Product Description
Dead or Alive 2's character-against-character action takes place in gorgeously rendered locations ranging from a cathedral to a moving elevator cage. In a special twist, characters can battle in multiple locations in many of the areas and interact with the environment. This means that the cathedral window is more than just a pretty background--it's just waiting for an opponent to be hurled through it and onto the fighting platform below. Perhaps the coolest feature of all is the Tag Battle mode that enables fighters to summon a teammate into the action. A total of 12 male and female fighters are available, each boasting a slew of basic and special attacks, tag-team combos, reversals and throws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fighting game ever? Definatly, 2 Sep 2001
In my opinion, Dead Or Alive 2 currently just holds the title of best beat 'em up ever, with Tekken Tag close behind. Interactive backgrounds, counter attacks and holds, and extremely fast action is the way to go in future beat 'em ups. Also, the controls can mean that anyone can just pick up the controller and play, but also means that if you're a hardcore fan of the game, you can master it and learn huge attack combos and combo throws. Also, it has the ability to have tag team battles, which brings out whole new tactics for when you are fighting. Using quick tag means that both your characters can destroy the person you are fighting at almost the same time. Then there are the double team moves, which, for some reason, Tekken Tag has hardly any of. Interactive backgrounds are also a very good feature on DOA2. Instead of just being in the middle of a place that just goes on forever, you can get to the walls and smash your unfortunate opponent into them, or through them!! What makes this feature even better is that some of your moves change by the wall. For example, Tina does a type of suplex against the wall and then smashes them into the floor. But, my favourite thing about this game has to be the counter ability. No more computer blocking forever if you're beating it, now both you and the computer have the ability to counter, which, once mastered, is a very important thing to do, because if not you could easily get beat quickly. Not only can you can counter attack, but also you can counter them into a hold, and sometimes a combo hold, which is multiple holds in a row that usually ends on one huge blow. The only disappointment is the end boss, Tengu, and the lack of characters. Overall, an incredible game that is worthy of best beat 'em up title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Fight-Fest, 12 Nov 2001
What more can I add to the other reviews? This game is simply unbelieveable, particularly when played in tag team mode with a friend. We have taken to using the two Japanese girls and mastering their moves and we can now usually soundly thrash any other pair of opponents within seconds. If you haven't played this game, rent it. If you've already rented it, buy it. If you've already bought it, love it !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Punch punch Kick Kick Throw Counter Block Kick....., 18 Mar 2002
DOA2 is a really great game- and this is from someone who used to think beat-em-ups were for brainless people.

The great thing about DOA2 is that it is so darned playable. Unlike Tekken Tag Tournament, you don't have to spend 6 months learning how to pull off the moves- there's a button for punch, one for kick, one to throw, another to block and just two to perform a counter hold. Tag throws allow awesome moves, and are easy to pull off as well. This means that the game is much more about timing and choice of attack, rather than rote learning of button combos. There are a fair number of combos to be learned- but they are very easy to pick up and intuitive to perform.

One of the best features, which TTT lacks, is the ability to knock your opponent off high buildings or into environmental hazards. Character will also slip when standing in water or snow.
Another advantage over TTT is the sheer speed of the characters. After playing DOA2, TTT characters positively look as though they're on valium or something...

There are various different game modes- in one-player there is the Story mode (don't expect a particularly deep plot though), a Survival mode, and Time attack mode. Multiplayer modes allow Tag-teams and Team battles (consecutive characters). Clearly the multiplayer modes are the most fun, as there's much more satisfaction to be gained from beating a real person next to you than the computer. You can record your battles and the game maintains fight statistics automatically.

Graphics-wise, the characters are pretty well done, although not really photo-realistic. However, the girls are all very sexy (and have rather bouncy chests!)and you can unlock up to 8 skimpy costumes each. There's a CG gallery upon completion and the wind tends to blow their skirts up too ....

A weak point of DOA2 is the rather limited number of characters (12), and locations (20). The locations are varied in quality- some are well drawn, others are decidedly boring. However, all in all DOA2 is a great PS2 title, and now that it's on Platinum, it's even more of a good deal- buy it now!
