5.0 out of 5 stars The sound of a well-spent youth, 8 Jun 2002
The single California (the Eagles with a catchy keyboard refrain and brilliant pounding guitars) starts the album, and sets the tone for a great pop-rock hybrid that actually lives up to its influences. Always On My Mind is teen love. Lonely Day is sunkissed and slightly reggae that breaks into a cool stomper. One Ray Of Sunlight is sombre in places (the singer sounds very like Fran Healey does in the Travis songs Falling Down and Driftwood, and there are similar string arrangements used). Anthem has lyrics that musos will empathise with (!) and a loveable tune to boot. In Our Darkest Hour sounds like Muse, amazingly. Turn Smile Shift Repeat drifts by in sombre unnoticeability (is that a word?). Hey Now Girl begins like the sound to the first ever computer game (Pong, anybody?) and is another good-time teen pop moment, with Beach Boys-ey harmonies. Nobody's Fault sounds like the middle bit of S Club 7's Reach at the start and like Jonny Be Goode's rhythm section at others, and is all the better for it! Good-time pop makes way for a riff reminiscent of Girl Like You by Edwin Collins, but fortunately All Over Again is a much better song, with more harmonies surging towards minor chords and snarled vocals at times (it's not ALL rosy!). A wobble board (or similar) begins Wishing Well the track, and then combusts into stabbing, quiet minor piano chords and then a wailing vocal and crashing guitars. Closing track Something Is Wrong is the obligatory acoustic ballad, but is pretty (/) beautiful.

If you love albums that get better with listens but are still simple melodic manifestations of a song you heard five years ago but can't quite remember, then buy, but most of all, buy this if you want fresh, fun summer music and enough moments of inspiration to shake a stick at!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Keeps Getting Better, 1 May 2004
By M. Gardner "Afro Matt" (Somerset, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
American pop/rock, and I use that in the most broad of terms, can be very samey, and therefore I leap for joy when a band really stands out. After hearing the theme tune to the TV series 'The O.C.' I had to get this album and it just keeps getting better with every listen. Opener and first single 'California' is an astounding, but far too short, intro to the album and while the rest fail to reach its pure feel-good brilliance there are some other gems in the playlist. One of my favourites is the low key analyse of Wall Street broker life that is 'Turn Smile Shift Repeat' and the toe-tapping beat of 'Lonely Day'. The songs here are diverse and very catchy without that cheap poppy sensation that seems ever present in the charts these days. If you are a fan of Third Eye Blind, Nine Days, Vertical Horizon or other such bands then buy this immediately. If you're not....then buy it anyway cos after a few plays you'll never take it out of your hi-fi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous, 18 May 2004
I was made aware of Phantom Planets existence (as many people may have been) during my regular viewings of The OC, which takes the phantom's song 'California' as it's theme tune. I immediately fell in love with the song and the lead singers voice which has a lovely tone. This album is one that will have your toes tapping. All you ladies out there will find yourself twirling around in your room imagining that the lead singer is singing tracks such as 'Always on my mind', 'hey now girl' and 'One ray of sunlight' just for you. This is a fabulous album, which has a definite 'summer' vibe and deserves to do very well!! Buy it!!
