Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

America Town, the debut album by Five for Fighting, is actually the work of one guy with a rather substantial chip on his shoulder who's taken his name from the amount of time an ice hockey player spends in the penalty box for fighting. Los Angeles native and erstwhile prodigy John Ondrasik really knows his way around a melody, bolstering it with a dramatic sense of timing and rhythm like a more modern and hipper Elton John. And that defiant chip does makes for powerful poetry, although oftentimes he sacrifices logic and clarity for the sake of iambic pentameter. While "Superman" is a catchy affair about the restrictions of being superhuman and the desire to belong ("I'm only a man in a silly red sheet looking for special things inside me"), it's doubtful that anyone who ever read a DC comic would believe that Superman would ever be "digging for kryptonite on this one-way street", since a loose fragment from Superman's home planet would kill him. At best, Five for Fighting follows in the narrative-based path paved by Counting Crows. --Jaan Uhelszki, Amazon.com

CD Description

It's not difficult to see why Five For Fighting struck a chord with young American audiences. In their music one can hear a bit of Dave Matthews's vocal warmth, Tonic's pop sensibility, Train's melodic soulfulness, and Counting Crows' intensity. This is not to say that the ceaselessly infectious and hook-filled AMERICA TOWN is derivative. It's just that Five For Fighting are tapping into a gestalt of which they are as much a part as any of the aforementioned bands. They alsohappen to be quite good at plying their pop-rock trade; constructing enough classic melodies, memorable choruses, and gritty ruminations to hopelessly ensnare anyone enamored of folk-rock circa 2001. Hooks, warmth, charisma, what more could one reasonably ask for from a humble American rock band?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 20 Jun 2002
I took a chance on this cd from the good ratings it got from Amazon and the fact that it is supposed to sound like Counting Crows. I am now extremely glad i took that chance. 'Easy tonight' is a brilliant track that has featured on 'ER', so is 'Bloody Mary', but the shear brilliance of 'superman' gives enough reason to by the cd without all the other songs. 'Superman' is one of those songs that you have heard before and can never remember who sings it. Well 'Five for Fighting' sing it. The good thing about this album is it does not fade towards the end. Track 7, 'Michael Jordan' is about how John Ondrasik (the guy who is five for fighting) wants to be Michael Jordan, and near the end is the mellow 'Last Great American'. This is a really good album and five for fighting have great potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stare moodily, Dawson, this one's for you..., 7 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Finally blessed with a UK release, the ultimate CD for those who deal with teen angst by sitting on the edge of a pier in the rain looking out to the horizon. Five for Fighting are masters of the simple guitar-based Americana that is ever-present on shows such as Dawson's Creek and Smallville. In fact, the lead single 'Superman' is based around the young hero himself having an identity crisis. Potential second single 'Jainy' is another masterwork, with a simple piano riff creating an incredibly heartrending track.
In short, this is a very strong album that will return to your player every time Pacey dumps you. Again.

5.0 out of 5 stars its about time he UK woke up and listened to this, 4 May 2002

(REAL NAME)
Five for Fighting is the sports oriented pen name of John Ondrasik, meaning a sin bin penalty for unnecessary roughness in Ice Hockey, a fact surely the whole world will soon know. The cd has rarely been out of my player for the last 18 months, when I purchased it, and the first thing that grabs you is the song, 'Superman'. The subject of which has caused much debatem but each person seems to have their own views. To me it seems to be a song where john sings about his own failings, when everyone sees him as being so strong. After a while the other tracks seem to grow, and several, the title track, Jeanie, Last Great American leap out. but it is Easy Tonight that is the show stopper here, andis worth the purchase price alone. Five For fighting will be one of the big names to emerge this year in music, don'tbe surprised to be caught under his magic spell, but most of al, enjoy what is one of the most wonderful and thoughtful releases you are likly to hear this year.
