5.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre sound, great music, 1 May 2002
By A Customer
Bat Chain Puller, the backbone of this CD "compilation" is certainly one of Captain Beefheart's best recordings. Although many of the songs were later released on other records, I think that these versions are superior. Most are longer and better realised than subsequent versions. The two songs, Seam Crooked Sam and Odd Jobs, that were never released on his original recordings, are exquisite.

However, the addition of the live works detract from the album as a complete listening experience. The recording quality is not perfect - with a hiss that sounds like the music originated from a mid quality bootleg cassette tape without Dolby. Nevertheless this album is essential for any Beefheart and his Magic Band fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true lost classic - believe the hype!, 25 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This is the real deal folks. Bat Chain Puller as it was meant to be heard. Beefheart was at his most lucid and beautiful when he created these songs and they have NEVER sounded so good. The band - including Denny Walley - are one of the best since Trout Mask. An album that bridges the gap between the earlier albums and the final trilogy, if you are a Beefheart fan do not hesitate or think about it - just buy this record now. If you are not a Beefheart fan then this CD will convert you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the wait, 31 Mar 2003
Well if you're one of many wanting to hear the original Bat Chain Puller session tracks, here they are. Or are they? The sound quality is poor, the tracks have obviously been mastered at the wrong speed and the packaging and sleeve notes are bootleg quality at best.

Avoid.
