Amazon.co.uk Review
In Jagden und Formen (Hunts and Forms), composer Wolfgang Rihm uses only a few rhythmic and melodic ideas and develops them into a large-scale work. The music is tightly integrated in structure--what one might term as "academic". Its resulting homogeny is therefore strange since the piece has undergone numerous changes since 1995. Rihm's ideas about the compositional process are that since music changes all the time why not then continually change one's own works? With such an integrated piece like this, it becomes a realistic exercise since much of the material bears striking similarities. The piece starts with two solo violins in a rhythmic dialogue. The initial material is developed in various instrument groups--strings first, then woodwind, brass and percussion--creating orchestral colouring which is reminiscent of Messiaen. Although not strictly experimental, interest is sustained throughout by this process of orchestral "musical chairs". The piece exemplifies and crystallises current contemporary writing without necessarily breaking new ground. --Dominic Sewell
