3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite finished, 6 April 2002

(REAL NAME)
If, like me, you're a fan of WipeOut 2097 on the PlayStation, then you'll be surprised at this conversion. Understandably, the game is quite capable of running at very high speeds, and unfortunately this is where the edges start to show. Game speed is directly tied to frame rate, such that when starting the game you're expected to select the frame rate you want to play at. Default selection is 30 which is *way* too slow a frame rate, but provides roughly the correct rate of play. Select a faster rate, and the game plays faster, select maximum rate and the game is unplayable. You see, the frame rate is being used as the basic timing device for *everything* in the game: lap times included. Use anything faster than about 50fps, and the clock starts to count 2 seconds / second!
Despite this, and despite the massive processing advantage the average macintosh has over a PS1, the game lacks all the polish of the original game. There are no exhaust trails, and no light flares around the weapons.
Once I started getting over these initial differences, it has to be said that the game play is exactly as I remember it from the PS1. So - for the moment I'll live with the problems, but lets face it - we expect *finished* products for our money chaps! Better luck next time.
