Amazon.co.uk Review
The Trials & Tribulations of Russell Jones, Ol' Dirty Bastard's third album, was largely recorded on the run and the Wu Tang Clan member was later arrested in a McDonalds restaurant in Philadelphia. Suffice to say, it is not his best work. Despite the title (Russell Jones being ODB's real name) this is not a self-confessional record in which ODB returns to sanity. Oh no. This is a man who raps about "stinking like doo doo" has a song entitled "I Wanna F***" and is now spending 2-4 years in a New York prison. Insanity is a key part of his act and personality. If his excellent previous album Nigga Please explored ODB's party side then Trials & Tribulations delves into his dark depths, confirming his position as the Screaming Jay Hawkins of his generation. However while ODB's creative mania remains intact, the album's production feels rushed, with many of the beats sounding cheap and flat. Best track is "Caught Up" which takes off from where ODB left Kelis on "Got Ya Money". He gains a credit for determination though. Not even imprisonment has stopped ODB's musical career. He signed his latest recording contract shortly after he was put away. Unfortunately ODB's new label is a little short of the readies, hence the glut of B list guest rappers on the album including Mack 10, E-40 and Too Short. Fellow Wu Tang Clan members such as the Rza and Raekwon are notable by their absence, wisely deciding to skip this one until their Shaolin colleague is free again. It might be best if you do too. --Jake Barnes

2.0 out of 5 stars A real let down, 10 Jul 2002
By J. W. Bassett (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
While the rest of the members of the Wu Tang Clan released substandard second albums (except Ghostface Killah) ODB actually raised the bar with N***a Please, and while due to mitigating circumstances this album could never meet such dizzy heights - it is nevertheless disappointing.

Many of the verses are merely recycled from ODB's earlier work (many are direct ports from 'Forever') and much of the production is weak and derivative. That isn't to say there aren't decent moments. The standouts are 'Dirty & Stinkin' featuring the Insane Clown Posse and 'Caught Up'. Both are reminiscent of funk that made 'N***a Please' so good.

In a nutshell it would be a below-par album from any artist, but from someone as wildly creative as ODB it is a massive disappointment. Wait from him to get out of prison - his best work is yet to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's The Problem?, 18 May 2002
By A Customer
I don't understand why the reviews for the album are so bad. Alright, the album does feel a bit rushed, but it still shows the quality displayed on 'Return to the 36 Chambers ' and 'N**** Please', and is almost as good as 'The Dirty Story'.

The beats on here, could do with some polishing by the RZA, but are still more than good enough. And ODB does use some old lyrics, but the lyrical side of this album is still very, very good.

There are a number of stand out tracks on this LP. They include both versions of both 'Anybody' and the stunning 'Dirty and Stinkin' as well as 'Reunited', 'Dogged Out' and 'Caught Up'.

This is a great album from a class MC, don't miss out on it, because of some wierdly inaccurate reviews. Buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars ODB's third sh-outing, 25 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The album begins with another intro where Ol Dirty resembles a perverted Barney from the Simpsons. This time out the tracks retain their funky smooth sound akin to those on N**** Please and ODB is accompanied by a number of guests which are not in keeping with the usual appearance of his Wu cohort. Strangly the beats seem to accompany Dirty's harsh rapping well and you can't help boppin your head to many of the tracks. Here Comes the Judge is more akin to Return To the 36 Chambers' wild style and is also reminicent of Gravediggaz' Diary of a Madman. Lintballz is another decent track keeping the sound low key and sinister.

This album does have some flaws, particularly in the Lyrics department. On many of the tracks ODB simply uses his old lyrics to a new sound, the new sounds are cool its a shame there are no new lyrics to match. The lyrics he has chosen to repeat are some of his better stuff but is it enough to make this album a classic? No. To wrap up: I liked the funky beats & the metal skits. ODB needed to appear more on each track and put out some new lyrics, Rza's production wouldn't have gone a miss and some tracks like Snakes and Protect Ya Neck 2 would have been welcome additions. Not a bad album but the weakest of his releases to date....
