Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Samson was never the same after he'd been to the hairdressers, and much the same thing can be said about the once generously hirsute Wonder Stuff frontman Miles Hunt, who on Miles Hunt Club seems to have left both his locks and his sense of mischief on the barber's floor. While Miles Hunt's other creative faculties remain intact, devotees of the Wonder Stuff--particularly those who snoozed-off during his mid-1990's stints with Vent 141 and as a video DJ on MTV--may awaken to find the petulance of his new project too much of a cold shower, especially when juxtaposed against the bonhomie and bare-faced cheek of yore. Yeah, there's the same old sideline sneer but this time the lack of immediate tunes (give them time, they're worth sticking with) and worrisome air of late-night soul-searching dishes out the cynicism unsweetened. Even the poppiest song here, the really rather good "Everything Is Not Enough"--with its talk of burning bridges and Rousseau-inclined philosophising--is a self-contained "don't look back" slate-wiping manifesto.

As might be expected from someone who once got away with calling a pop song "Size Of A Cow", Hunt is fairly proficient at sidestepping lyrical cliché. Alas, a couple of times he misses--"there's a shadow hanging over me" isn't that an original line and the song "Flapping On The Pier" sounds too much like one of Deacon Blues' drippier moments. Regrettably, his band's repetitive one-size-fits-all musical approach taxes the listeners' patience--perhaps some bagpipes wouldn't have gone amiss. Hunt is clearly lost in thought, but he'd be wise to keep an eye on his audience. --Kevin Maidment

3.0 out of 5 stars Middle-aged Miles matures....., 10 April 2002
By A Customer
As a long-standing fan of the Wonderstuff, I bought this CD with high hopes.

In summary, it seems that in the long period since the Wonderstuff's demise, Miles has mellowed....fewer angry rants, acoustic not electric guitars, and not a fiddle in earshot.

The songs are good but not anywhere near as instant as old W'stuff material (perhaps they may be growers over time).

In summary, a decent album but not amazing. If you buy it, don't expect the same fodder as you got by the sackload with the Wonderstuff. Miles has clearly got older, taken a more relaxed direction...I guess he's working on the hope that the Wonderstuff fan base has aged in a similar way over the past few years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Miss Mr Hunt? Well catch up now, 11 April 2002
By A Customer
The Miles Hunt Club is Mile's first band since splitting with Vent in 96. After soloing for a few years he brings out his first "band" album on an UK based record label (eagle)
The Album is a mixture of tracks taken from his first Solo album "Hairy on the inside" & 2 sampler EP's "life great" & "five songs" Which will leave some hard core fans a bit miffed as there is only 2 songs that have not been published before. The old songs have all been beefed up with the band sound. This works for some of them, with best being "straight lines", "Amongst the old reliable" and "feeling I have been waiting for" however some songs just don't work such as "everything is not ok"
This makes the album ok but not a winner! If you like 10 out of 12 tracks you are doing well. There is no youth / fresh sound to this album or band it more of a background dinner party type of thing. Ok in it own way but not ground braking. Mr Hunt is a talented man, but your talent has been lost on The Miles Hunt Club!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stuff!, 11 Jul 2003
Having been a huge fan of the Wonder Stuff I was relieved that they had reformed back in the year 2000 after an six year lay-off and have been playing live regularly ever since.

The only slightly disappointing thing about this, was the fact that there was/is, no new Stuffies material.

However, slight disappointment turned to major happiness on listening to the Miles Hunt Club Album.

From the opening 'Everthing is not ok' through to the closing 'Flapping on the pier (pt 2)', Miles unique lyrical style takes you on a journey that won't disappoint. This ain't the Wonder Stuff but there ain't no mistaking Miles' very original slant on the world.

A must for any Wonder Stuff fan and I would imagine fans of bands such as the bunnymen, coldplay, oasis etc would enjoy the tunes of one of the most underated frontmen on the planet today.

Enjoy!
