5.0 out of 5 stars "Sexy Greek Music", 9 Sep 2002
By A. Siaravas "minotaure" (LONDON, KENSINGTON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Eleni Karaindrou’s Trojan Women is an excellent achievement for this Greek-born classical composer. Modeled after Euripides’ timeless anti-war play, Trojan Women is anything but a light-hearted record. Throughout this dramatic disc, Karaindrou uses a variety of Mediterranean instruments to portray the tale of suffering brought on by war. The lyre (which sounds like a violin) is often used to convey the tearful main theme, while the lauto (lute) and ney (flute) provide the other melodies and complement the vocal chorus.

The slow and sorrowful “Lament I” represents the darkness of Euripides’ tragedy very vividly, and the ghostly choir in “First Stasimon - An Ode Of Tears” is entrancing. On “Andromache's Theme” the sound is expansive yet eerie, as if you are standing alone in a mist shrouded field, while “Hecuba's Theme II” is a dramatic yet subtle choir piece. The closing track, “Astyanax' Memory” ends the album by returning to the main sorrowful theme heard throughout the record. Overall, Eleni Karaindrou’s Trojan Women is a striking statement that sounds every bit as timeless as the play it is meant to accompany.

Summary: A sparse and sorrowful musical companion to the play by Euripides....SO GOOD!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mournful, and one of Karaindrou's most distinctive works, 20 May 2009
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Eleni Karaindrou was one of my great discoveries of recent years. I have already posted reviews of "The Weeping Meadow", "The Suspended Step of the Stork", "Ulysses' Gaze", "Music for Films" and "Eternity and a Day". While the music and its background have been well described by reviewer Minotaure, I'd like to add a few words on this particular work as part of the canon of works by Karaindrou.

All her music mixes traditional Greek instruments with European classical instruments. The Greek instruments often take the part of solo voices, set against a symphonic or chamber orchestra. The music is invariably mournful, and introverted, yet offers moments of hope and glimpses of great beauty.
This is the kind of music to play on a rainy day. One can get lost in waves of sweet melancholy, just staring out the window. Her works are decidedly more than just soundtracks. They have the same musical (compositional) qualities which the finest works by Ennio Morricone achieve.

While I thought "The Weeping Meadow", "The Suspended Step of the Stork", "Ulysses' Gaze" and "Music for Films" all were fantastic and definitely worth having, "Eternity and a Day" came as a mild disappointment. The music doesn't work as well without the movie, and the interspersed traditional themes break up the mood twice.

"Trojan Woman" is one of Karaindrou's finest works. Also, it might be her most distinctive. The European classical orchestra was suspended, and the Greek feel is stronger than on any other CD. While it is clearly present on all, it only dominates on this work. Accordingly, the soundworld is completely different. There is the sorrowful choir, and then traditional instruments played over an abysmal bass drum. Very different from all her other scores, though it could only have been written by Karaindrou.

If you already own other CDs by Karaindou and you are wondering if you need this one, too: Yes, you do. If you are only going to have 2 of her CDs, this must be one of them. It stands out in every way.
