Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In Between is an apposite title for a Jazzanova LP: if there's one thing we've learned about this six-man team from Berlin since they emerged on the scene five years ago, its that their music occupies those nether regions that exist between and beyond established genres. This debut has taken a while to arrive and follows a modest amount of original productions and a plethora of remixes (check Remixes 1996-2000 for a comprehensive view). Ostensibly, it's been worth the wait. In Between is exactly what you'd expect from Jazzanova, a collection of soulful, funky records, old at heart but updated with a modern dancefloor twist. From the opening salvo--a neatly segueing blend of intro "Something's Missing" and first track "L.O.V.E And You And I"--it's obvious we're about to hear an exercise in quality control and style-straddling dynamics. Jazz and soul and hip-hop nuzzle cosily into bed together via samples and live bass and vibes, making a classy and typical future/retro hybrid. The LP continues in the same sophisticated and sassy manner, with different vibes flowing mellifluously together to make swirling, quasi-nebulous phuture soul. Live players merge with computers, rappers (Capitol A, Hawkeye Phanatic), poets (surprise, surprise it's Ursula Rucker), singers (Clara Hill, Vikter Duplaix, Valerie Etienne, Doug Hammond, Desney Bailey) to make a warm, organic album, shot through with intricate programming and well-arranged songs. In Between isn't quite a modern classic but it is brilliant--which still isn't bad for a first outing.--Paul Sullivan

Description

The first full-length album from the German DJ/producer collective Jazzanova is a clear example of their eclectic sound. Influenced by nu-jazz, chillout and jazz house, Jazzanova's work also includes examples of afrobeat and even latin jazz. As well as the group themselves, In Between contains spots from a variety of guest vocalists, who contribute much, from rap to soaring vocals. The reason for this band's continued cult popularity is obvious in this unique, original album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nu-Jazz has arrived., 7 May 2002
By peterrea@hotmail.com (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
Jazz is progressing. When you mention Jazz to anyone, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and that bloke from The Fast Show that says "Hmmmm, Jazz.....nice" automatically spring to mind. So logically, Nu-Jazz is creating waves and is pushing the boundaries within the most experimental and skilled genre of music.

Nu-Jazz has been threatening to surface for a while. St. Germain have become popular through word of mouth, with a blend of French Deep house and down-tempo jazz, LTJ Bukem's Good Looking crew experimented with Jazzy Drum and Bass when Jungle was at its peak, and Giles Peterson is becoming ever more popular with his love for hip hop/jazz fusion and re-invented old skool classics from the likes of Minnie Ripperton (Les Fleur) and The Masters At Work.

Jazzanova continue the work of 4-Hero, Vikter Duplaix and The Cinematic Orchestra by exploring a more traditional set-up of live instruments, with hip hip/drum and bass beats and hip hop lyrics, keeping the synthesiser trickery more to the background (apart from on "Soon") and opting for a laidback sound with a focus on different instruments from track to track. It's quieter compared to 4-Hero's grand spectacular orchestral strings explosions and crescendos, with more emphasis on percussion.

The production is extraordinary. What Hi-Fi should be picking this up to test the latest £3000 amp. All sounds are crisp and the bass thumps cleanly throughout. A multitude of sounds all sit comfortably and repeated listening uncovers hidden sounds that add great depth and atmospherics.

Jazzanova are definitely mixing with the big boys.....nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzanova sizzling !!!, 17 May 2002
By A Customer
After Koop's Waltz for Koop Jazzanova Compost records have come up with an even better release for 2002 in In between. To my knowledge this is the Berlin groups debut. This is a superb album of contrasts and with sounds which echoe rhythms of 60's and seventies soul grooves, especially on the patchy yet sentimental opening track and my favourite track "Another new day" which end up sounding like across between The Dells Sing a rainbow to phsychadelic lazy jazz trips . There's chill out grooves urban raps and maestro Vikter Duplaixs soulful vocals, and other international guests including Ursula Rucker . From electronic breaks to a touch of eighties style jazz fusion. A diverse collection that sits in the category where dance meets nu jazz .I could see Inside out being one of the hottest dance albums of the year, stunning art work for the cover picture book style in this case , do judge this book bt it's cover!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars deep grooves, 5 Aug 2002
By JD (Tokyo Japan) - See all my reviews
I think this album is superb, a true musical journey into the depths of introspection. I have read lots of the praises of the press and some of the negative ones as well. Basically this album isnt something you will get the first time you hear it. It is an intricate piece of work. So if you are looking for something to please the fickle look elsewhere, but for those patient listeners that like a variation in the mix, this is for you. I have listened to all of jazzanova's productions and this will please those who prefer musical growth over the predictable. Cheers Jazzanova,
