4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent simulation with great play life, 2 Mar 2003
By R. Forssman (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I always wanted to be a jockey for a day and I would imagine this is as close as it gets. In previous reviews, reviewers have mentioned the basis of the game being the story mode which is well supported by two play and steeplechase mode. In story mode, you have the goal of becoming champion jockey. However it is a journey which is well orchestrated with story building subtleties like your stable trainer telling you have one more win to get 50 victories or congratulating you on a Grade 1 victory. As you improve more trainer's become available and of course better horses.
The impressive part of the gameplay is how you have to position yourself according to the type of horse you are riding. If you miss the break (slow at the start) on a front runner you are doomed and be too close to the front on the back runner and the same occurs. Timing your run is critical and the thrill of victory matches anything I have played before. The key to this game is to persevere as in the beginning you are sick and tired of picking off your goggles as you cross the line with the field already in the unsaddling enclosure. You start to improve and then it is oh why not one more. The three difficulties ensure long play life.
There are some items which would have been great in the game such as a betting sheet and more camera angles during the race but I can tell you it runs smoothly and you can never quite get enough. Great purchase for all but especially those overweight jockeys (> 58 kgs which includes 95% of us).

5.0 out of 5 stars G1 Jockey, 25 Nov 2002
I bought this game after I read a reveiw on here. It looked good and as I am into horses, I thought it would be a safe bet.
I wasn't wrong, either.
The game is addictive and moreish. I want to play it, not just when I have nothing better to do.
The technical stuff is good. The graphics are good, and the detail of every racecourse (there are 6 or 7, maybe more) is brilliant. It really feels as if you are there. Horse graphics are good, and each horse looks slightly different.
This game isn't one you can win. You keep going and going, so it is worth the price you pay.
The game is this : you are an inexperienced rookie jockey. In your first year you aim to get rides and be the Rookie of the Year. After the first year, your aim is top jockey. This means most wins and most money won.
I really love this game, and would recommend it highly. The choice is amazing. 1000's of horses, lots of jockeys, lots of trainers, lots of races and lots of race lengths.
Buy it and you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars G1 Jockey - one of the most addictive games I've ever played, 12 Mar 2002
By Mike (Wales) - See all my reviews
Any horseracing fan out there should definitely get this game. Others should seriously consider it. Horse racing games rarely make it to consoles but courtesy of a Japanese import we get a great version.
The action itself takes place in short bursts, races not taking much more than a couple of minutes. The graphics of the horses and jockeys are fantastic and the courses do the job. There's actually not that much to draw in detail so there's no hint of slowdown when there are eighteen horses in a race. The controls are pretty basic but the secret of success is tactical positioning of your horse and deciding the right time to go for home. Move too early and your stamina runs out, whilst too late and there's no time to catch up. This sounds fairly simplistic but is surprisingly addictive. There's nothing more satisfying than coming with a late run to win by a short head and then punching the air in delight.
All this is done in 3D from just above your jockey's head, shoulder buttons used to look left and right. A Replay function is available for your greatest victories with an option to save.

Where this game really stands out though is in story mode. Here you take on the role of apprentice jockey at a stable and your goal is to get to the top. Each week you must negotiate rides. By riding winners other stables ask you to ride for them giving you more rides, whilst lose on a favourite and they may think twice next time. It's this formula that just make you want to keep going from week to week. You may have favourite horses you ride which are racing at different tracks on the same day so you have to choose and may lose the ride on the other. It's not easy either. So far on Normal mode(Easy and Hard also available) I've ridden in 74 races and won just 13!. Sometimes you won't have a chance of winning but do better than expected and the stable's trust will go up.

This is all backed up by a massive statistical database. 2000 horses with attributes and race/winnings history. 2 year olds mature and improve into 5 year olds. 20+ trainers, jockey ranking tables with 65 other computer jockeys, prize money in EUROS. A horse hall of fame and your career history which keeps track of all cups won together with G1(top races) successes. All the horses and trainers of course are made up but it's surprising how attached you get to your regular rides. Add to that a two player mode and steeplechasing(fences) in an exhibition mode and this is one great game.

Non horseracing fans should check it out, it's seriously addictive. The only downside is a text based system and no speech in story mode and no commentary - understanable with a Japanese conversion. Maybe a British developer can put this right.

All in all G1 Jockey is not going to make the headlines with MGS2 around but this is one game you should get your hands on. For all horseracing fans it's a must buy.
