For the extreme Eurovision fan..., 7 Feb 2006
I remeber picking this up a couple of years ago and dismissing it as it didn't contain many actual Eurovision entries. I was wrong to do so, this is a fantastic little CD.The focus of this compilation is on songs that didn't quite make it to the contest, and for those that did, they didn't win. (The one exception to this is "Puppet On A String".) Actual Eurovision entries include UK 1967 and 1985* as well as Irish entries from 1965*, 1967* and 1976. *I have not found these on any other Eurovision CD. The remaining tracks are British preselection songs from the 60s and 70s - these include all the other songs presented by Sandie Shaw on the Rolf Harris show in 1967. Some tracks are covers, as the original artist(s) didn't record them in the first place, e.g. "Suddenly" sung on this CD by Petula Clark. Most of the background information about the contents (written by Maria Callous) is presented, in a somwhat haphazard way in places, in the cover sleeve, which tells you the years the songs were released along with anecdotes. Overall, I would recommend this CD to die-hard Eurovision fans or those who like 60s/70s easy listening pop.
