5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about scale, 18 Sep 2004
By John Anderson "JohnRA" (UK) - See all my reviews

This movie is a neat introduction to the universe and our place in it.
There are three journeys that this DVD takes you on.
1. is from earth to outer space to the furthest regions of the known universe. This is very similar to the opening credit sequence of Contact (the movie with Jodie Foster).
2. is to inner space, from a drop of water down to atoms and what they are made of.
3. is a journey through the life of the universe from the big bang to today and beyond, taking in some of the amazing things that happen in the universe in accelerated time.
The computer graphics used to visualise these journeys are good. The narrative by Morgan Freeman is informative and spoken in his trademark rich mellow voice. The music also works well.
I would recommend this DVD to all people interested in cosmology or astronomy and especially to those people who are just starting out. It is both entertaining and educational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let this wash over you and wonder...!, 18 Aug 2007
By Mark Harrington "Crikey" (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had this DVD for about a year now and it never ceases to leave me with a sense of awe - and even a tear in my eye if I'm in the right mood.

I've just visited the US Amazon site, and it contains a few reviewers who comment on the picture/sound quality or who put the DVD down as 'High School' material and just don't get it...

Whatever the case - ignore them. Just put on this film, relax, and wonder at the scale (both large and small) of the universe we live in, and how small (or large!) we are, somehow stuck in the middle of it all...

HIGHLY recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cosmic Voyage - a masterpiece in science education, 5 Oct 2009

Cosmic Voyage [DVD] [1996] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

I've viewed (and used in my teaching) many science education videos, and this is definitely one of the best! In 36 minutes, it covers the entire scale range from quarks to the universe, with breathtaking imagery, a melodious soundtrack and Morgan Freeman's resonant commentary. Truly inspiring!

My only complaint is that it isn't available in region 2 or multiregion format.
