At last, a Celine album that I like!!, 24 Oct 2002
I have always thought that Celine Dion's only appeal is to mothers such as mine, or to people who don't like pop, dance, r'n'b, or anything else worth listening to. Sure, I liked a few of her songs, but never enough to actually go out and buy the album.
When I first heard A New Day Has Come on the radio, I fell in love with it, but imagined that the new album would be like all the rest that my mum owns, patchy. However, on an impulse I decided to go out and get it, for myself! And I'm glad I did. I'm not going to rave about her voice or anything, but I have to say that she does sound good on these new updated songs. In fact, the whole CD is updated, as is probably her appeal, which has certainly grown to include me!
So what is in this album to make me change my mind? The simple answer is, new, great songs, such as Right in front of you, Sorry for love, Goodbye, and my especial favourite, When the wrong one loves you right.
One bad thing that I have to say about this album, however, is that it goes on for too long. 17 tracks is getting on for a bit much by the end of the CD, and although I do like each song, I end up putting it on program. The program does vary each time though, which is another good thing about Celine's album, the songs are all different to each other, and ther is a different one for each varying mood that you find yourself in.

AN EXCELLENT COMEBACK!, 17 April 2002

Celine's done it again, another class album. This time, she's blended great ballads such as her faveourite, Have You Ever Been in Love. Shania Twain's producer husband, Mutt Lange, wrote the track, Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) and what a track. A definate single, i think. Upbeat songs include Right in Front of You, Ten Days, A New Day Has Come and probably her next single, I'm Alive ( from the writers of Thats The Way It Is.Celine also includes dancy songs, (yes you heard correctly) as in When The Wrong One Loves You Right, Super Love (brilliant) and a Kylie/Steps type song, Sorry For Love. There is even an R&B type song, Rain Tax (It's Inevitable). All that and two classics, Nature Boy (Nat King Cole) and At Last (Etta James). The album has songs TO SUIT EVERYONE'S MUSIC TASTE, so buy it now, it really is excellent. Just look at the album charts, number one in its first two weeks, really does reflect that position. It should also add a few more million to her 150 million albums already sold! Well done on a great album to the world's most successful artist

Though this is far from my usual listening fare, I thoroughly enjoy it; the superb arrangements, the fine material, Celine's outstanding phrasing, and the many colorations of her sound. This is truly an exceptional female pop vocal performance.
Surprisingly, the songs have been recorded in various places, with more than a single arranger, but the CD has a cohesiveness not usual for a production with so many different sources. The songs have a variety of moods, but she really shines in the slower ballads, especially when she sings in a lovely sweet pianissimo, like in the final section of "Prayer". A track I find very moving is "Goodbye's (the Saddest Word)" about the love between a mother and daughter.The highlights for me are two classics: A favorite from my childhood, Eden Ahbez's "Nature Boy", which originally was sung by Nat King Cole in the 1948 film "The Boy with Green Hair", and the Gordon/Warren "At Last", from the 1942 "Orchestra Wives", originally performed by Glenn Miller, and which later became a huge hit for Etta James. Both pieces are outstanding in their fresh renditions for this CD, and it is wonderful to hear these gorgeous songs kept alive by a modern-day diva. Celine's technical abilities and vocal range are a marvel, and another quality I appreciate is her enunciation. I can understand every word she is saying, something I am not always able to do these days, with other artists. The booklet insert has lyrics and complete recording information, a charming foldout central collage of family photos, and with 17 songs, you get quantity as well as quality.
