Digital Dream L'Espion [0.1MP]

Digital Dream L'Espion [0.1MP]

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The L'Espion from Digital Dream is a marvel of design and a must-have for all gadget freaks. This keyring camera is absolutely tiny, measuring just 58mm x 40mm x 15mm. Controls are limited to a shutter release and a single mode button. Taking a photo is simply a question of selecting a mode, raising the viewfinder and pressing the shutter release. Modes include high/low resolution, a continuous shooting for creating AVI files, and a self timer.

Unlike some other cameras of this type, Digital Dream has made the smart decision of using standard AAA batteries, rather than the more expensive photo type. This is important, because the L'Espion uses volatile memory that means that it requires a small but constant current to maintain data. In our tests, a standard alkaline battery lasted about 2 weeks. As long as you regularly upload from the camera, you are unlikely to lose data.

With just 100K pixels, the L'Espion is never going to win awards for image quality. However, given its keyring size and miserly battery consumption, it has the advantage of always being on hand.

The device is well presented in an unusual pyramid box making it an ideal gift. The unit is supplied with PhotoExpress software, EyeStar Mail Webcam support software, a key chain, and a leatherette pouch. PhotoExpress is aimed at the novice user and although it has a rather garish interface, provides a useful means of capturing, viewing and organising your images. EyeStar Mail has an equally unusual interface, but is extremely easy to use and at 30 frames per second provides an excellent Webcam function and will also record AVI files.--Nick Baxter

4.0 out of 5 stars one for the gadget addicts, 19 Feb 2002
By Andrew Duffy (London, UK) - See all my reviews
If the mere concept of the Digital Dream L'Espion doesn't make you drool in awe, wait until you see it in the flesh. Even the packaging is innovative and eyecatching - a windowed pyramid no bigger than an Egyptian souvenier, holding inside it the smallest digital camera I have ever set eyes on. My first impression was that this couldn't be for real, especially considering it's got a keyring attached to it.

Hands shaking, I opened the packaging (uncharacteristally carefully, by the way), the bits and bobs literally pouring onto my desk. The package includes a single AAA battery, a CD-ROM (holding the Mac and PC-compatible drivers & software), a ridiculously cute protective case and a USB cable. Within seconds, this camera has taken its first photos and they are displayed on my PC's desktop.

Okay, so the resolution is very low, but for those that have no interest in spending £200+ on a 'normal' digital camera (which they'll probably only ever use for nights out on the town), this is the perfect solution. And for those compulsive gadget addicts out there, I hereby challenge you not to buy the most desirable product on the market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fun, 3 Mar 2002
By A Customer
What can you say except that it's top quality fun. The best £40 I've spent in ages.

Alright the picture quality isn't brilliant but what do you want for forty quid? You won't mind the kids taking it out for a play and it's so small you don't mind taking it everywhere you go. It even looks like a toy and hangs off a key ring so it's not that attractive to thieves.

Gadget of the year in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's small, cheap, and cute!, 28 May 2002
By A Customer
The camera was a great hit at my seven-year-old's birthday party. That is what is great about it: it appeals to the seven year old in us all. Reminds me of the old ads in comic books - the spy camera, next to the X-ray specs and the grow your own mini sea horses. But this one really works!!

The continuous mode gives you 4 to 8 second long motion pictures (depending on the resolution) and is great for capturing baby's first steps.

One complaint: it only stays in continuous mode for about 4 seconds (unless you start shooting), because it automatically reverts to taking still pictures, which is a bit annoying. And it does not beep to warn you that it has switched, which is funny because it beeps for everything else! Gives a nice "thunk" sound when it is too dark to take a picture.

Picture quality is not great, but it is good enough for computer use. The webcam feature is a nice added feature, and works quite well with the software included. I found the software package a bit hard to figure out, actually, but eventually got the hang of it, so you will too, no doubt.

Hey ... you can't go wrong - get one for your kid, and another for your self!
