Amazon.co.uk Review

The Mediæval Bæbes continue to bring the early parts of the previous millennium slap-bang into the early years of this one with these modern settings of various medieval lyrics in five languages. Principal Bæbe and composer Katherine Blake uses authentic medieval musical tropes--modal melodies, spiky suspensions, bare chords--but mixes them in such a way as to ensure that a contemporary sense of drama remains. "The Snake", for example, a sad little story of misguided love, contains a thrillingly delayed percussion entry, and "Dringo Bell" (a version of Chaucer's "Miller's Tale") builds up to a very grand-guignol climax. But in amongst all the bawdiness--there are tracks called "The Circle of the Lustful" and "Lick the Maypole"--there are some hauntingly spare religious numbers. "There is No Rose" is a beautifully meditative piece, and worthy to stand with the many other settings of these words. Sometimes one feels that the Bæbes--with their breathy vocals and nonchalant pronunciation--insist on their modern-girl image a little too strongly. But if that doesn't put you off, then you'll find plenty to enjoy here.--Warwick Thompson

CD Description

Fourth album by ancient-music vocal group led by former Miranda Sex Garden vocalist Katharine Blake. Darker and more sparsely arranged than 2000's electronica-tinged 'Undrentide',its unusual acoustic instrumentation (ebow zither, astrowheel, hurdy-gurdy) frames songs sweetly sung in Middle English, Gaelic, Spanish, French, Italian, Welsh and Russian.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rose, 25 Jun 2002
By Andrew Pilkington "Wayland" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Rose takes the Baebes back to their musical roots. It has more in common with thier first album,Salva Nos, than it does with either Worldes Blysse or Undrentide. The 2 previous albums sucessfully blended mediaeval and modern to produce some truely stunning pieces, but The Rose concentrates more on the mediaeval side of the music.Although not all the lyrics are genuinely mediaeval and some would say neither are the arrangements, the atmosphere that is produced would not be out of place at any mediaeval gathering. If you are looking for 'mediaeval dance music' along the lines of 'Aria' this is not the album for you, but if you want mediaeval music with just enough of the 21st century to make it different then buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 'Baebes album to date!, 17 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Excellent album, the best so far. Beautiful singing, writing and playing. What a great sounding record! Can't wait until album 5. I especially like Blow Northern Wind and Dringo Bell; Slay Me Suddenly is a classic Baebes track. Buy it and it will open up your mind - you WILL like it!
