For those interested in the video nasties, 15 Mar 2004
If you're looking for glitsy, American style horror with blonde teenagers and other miserable stereotypes then you're in the wrong place. This film is very old and is one of the leading lights in the video nasties list. Unfortunately, The Grim Reaper has been sliced and diced at the hands of the BBFC so we still don't get the final product. Anyway, I doubt that would make much difference to be honest as the film is only pretty decent. It is about a group of (annoying) adults who get stranded on an island. They soon come to realise that all is not well when they hear the story of a cannibalistic maniac who roams the town at night in search for murder and meat. One by one the people drop like flies at his grisly hands until it is up to the remaining few to (shock horror) save the day. Not a great story, but the film has some great scenes in it such as the head in the bucket, the VERY disturbing image of a pregnant woman being dragged away by something off-screen, and the brilliant opening scene in which someone gets an axe buried in their face (no, I'm not that sick really!). These are genuinely shocking moments and it's good to be shocked. Also, I love the last scenes in the house and the nail-biting scene in the well which is filmed in broad daylight and you get to see the Grim Reaper in all his hideous glory in the sun. I was really tempted to give it three stars but I've given it two because much of the film is pretty bland (with the exceptions mentioned above). A lot of it is shot in pitch blackness and you can't even see what's going on which is really annoying. Maybe that's how they intended it. Like I said, this isn't a nicely shot film. It's grainy, looks incredibly dated and is badly directed but that adds to the effect. One other point is that the dubbing is absolutely atrocious! There's no synchronicity whatsoever so be prepared to watch people's mouths move but not in time with the words. Genuinely disturbing in places. Worth checking out if you're into the really old video nasties for some great scenes.
