If I had to choose the ten most extraordinary recordings, this CD had to be there.
Lipatti's reading of Mozart is so Mozartian that we can forget everything we heard before: every note can be heard distintively, with a proper breath, a proper respiration, and a very deep and different environment from one another. It's astonishing the absolute palette of feelings and moods Lipatti can bring in its deeply heartfelt touch. Karajan's accompaniment is secure and playful (yes, he had humour in those days).
But save yourself for the cadenzas, that improvisated part where most pianists sometime lose themselves. Lipatti doesn't play even a note from his own, but changes the themes, recriates them - as Mozart would do. There's something of Chopin in this absolutely bright Mozart, as Kaminsky and Hoffelé said.
The Schumann is of the same level; there are more compacted or inhabitated environments in the orchestral part than Karajan's, but he is still good here, driven away by his soloist. Here, also, each note is transfigurated with a clear dark light. We finish it with the feeling we entered the composer's soul.
For lots of people, Lipatti was the biggest pianist ever. Please listen and decide.
