One of the most impressive live bands I have ever seen., 15 Oct 2002
I only recently came across this fantastic Brazilian Jazz band. A colleague of mine recommended "Nois" to me, and told me that they happened to be playing live in my hometown. The performance was fluant, fired-up, rich, energetic, engaging, and combined full on Brazilian rhythms with heavy African beats. Along with these winning foundations came warm, sooting, delicate melodies, and great muscianship. Totally enthralled by the gig, I went on to buy this album, their debut CD. This predominantly acoustic album is a safe purchase for anyone interested in world music, but I did not find that it lived up to the expectations I had placed upon it after seeing the band live. It is certainly enjoyable and lively, and an album I will always look on with fondness, but the variety of tone and dynamics that the live performance boasted of does not seem to be matched on this CD. The arrangements are all spot on, and the energy of the gig is often present on this recording, but the tracks seem to lack definition. It may be worth noting that the line-up of the band has changed since the recording of this album, and that the recent additions are more than proving their worth. Despite any negative points I may be making, I continue to rate this band very highly and give this album a well earned 3 stars. I will definitely buy their next release with great anticipation, and I imagine that it will be of a greater quality than their debut CD.
