Product Description

CD Description
Second album by Montreal psychedelic improv quartet formed around guitarist Sam Shalabi. Chilled out space rock combining Middle Eastern and Indian instrumentation with free jazz modes and electronic drones. This recording is an expansion on their sound, with a more cinematic feel and adding some drum 'n' bass influences.

4.0 out of 5 stars Upon my word, this is a singular mixture of noises!, 11 Oct 2002
By Joshua McGregor (Airdrie, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This group of songs is, undoubtedly, one of the strangest I have heard, and one that requires the most listens to truly understand what on earth they were trying to accomplish. At first I thought I would never find that out, but after a large number of listens, I believe I have. Much of what you hear on "The Trial of St Orange" is not, at first listen, recognisable as music. Strange feedback, birdsong, water gurgling, distant gongs, and odd whisperings in French make this album sound more like a queer bunch of random noises than music, but do not let that deter you. These manifold noises just mentioned make music of their own, remarkably. When the noise is clearly music the tone is almost Middle-Eastern in character. The quality and detail of the songs is absolutely striking. Other than this I can scarce describe the feel of this album, since it IS so odd. You can be most certain of this: at every listen you will find new detail in the layered productions. Try this music out, and you absolutely MUST listen to it more than once. I consider myself fairly open-minded with music, and trust me, I had a time trying to adjust to this, but it was worth it. I hope it will be for you too.
