Amazon.co.uk Review
The 1976 Best Picture Award-winner Rocky has the look of a contemporary on-the-streets movie like Taxi Driver, but the heart of a fairytale. For the Bicentennial Year, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), a Muhammad Ali-like stars-and-stripes blowhard, cynically offers a title shot to an unknown over-the-hill Philadelphia club fighter, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Unlike the sequels, Rocky is a rare American sports movie to realise there's more drama and emotional resonance in losing than winning. The unique finale suggests that going the distance against the odds is more of a triumph than a conventional victory. Stallone, then an unknown as actor and writer, crafts the script to his own strengths--mumbling, Brando-like sincerity combined with explosive physicality expressed in his use of a side of beef as a punch-bag or wintery jogs around Philly. Surprisingly little of the film is taken up with ring action, as we follow Rocky's awkward courtship of pet-store minion Adrian (Talia Shire) and uneasy relationship with her slobbish brother (Burt Young), while Burgess Meredith provides the old pro licks as the curmudgeonly trainer. Though it led to a slick, steroid-fuelled franchise, it has a pleasing roughness, exemplified by the memorable funk/brass band score and the array of fidgety, credible method acting tics.

On the DVD: 1.85:1 16x9 print, which represents the sometimes-slick, sometimes rough look of the cinematography; feature commentary with supporting cast and crew (Burt Young admits to rubbing vermouth into his neck to make himself repulsive), video interview with Stallone, a retrospective featurette (which includes news footage of the Ali fight that inspired the story), 8mm test fight footage with a flabbier Stallone, tributes to Burgess Meredith and cameraman James Crabe, trailers for Rocky and all the sequels (which makes a solid précis of the whole series). All this and a "special hidden feature" (a comic sketch with Sly meeting Rocky).--Kim Newman

5.0 out of 5 stars the original..., 10 Dec 2002
This film was Sylvester Stallones breakthrough and he knew it before he'd finished writing the script. Most people know the story of Rocky so I'll not go into the details too much (except to point out the deliberate mistake in another customers review- he actually loses in the end). But the DVD has some really great extras which are worth mentioning.

Sylvester Stallone does something on this DVD which is very brave and very uncommon for a 'hollywood star', nevermind directors/ producers etc. He sets up a camera in front of himself in a quiet dull room and simply talks to it like it was someone grilling him about the film. But he doesn't just talk- he relives the processes he went through to take the film from an idea in the back of his head, right up until walking down to the lobby after the films premier. Its seldom if ever you will have such a full account of the creative processes of a film as old as this. Stallone lived and breathed this story and here, its written all over his face.

Theres also some footage they shot for the boxing in the final fight which is little more than a curiosity really, the commentary is good and the 'hidden extra' is Stallone meeting 'Rocky' after all this time for a quick stroll down memory lane ('Why'd you make me eat all those eggs?')

All round a great film and excellent DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'No ones ever went the distance with Creed'..., 13 Sep 2004
By A Customer
You need to be absolutely heartless not to enjoy Rocky. Even the story of how the film came about is so warming, and in Rocky tradition, was a bit of a 'one in a million' shot. Now priced ridiculously cheap, any film fan out there should take the opportunity and own this feature packed DVD Special Edition.
The story revolves around Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a down-on-luck amateur boxer and part time loan shark. He stays in a run down apartment, has virtually no money and his lovelife is luckless. All this however is about to change.
When World Heavyweight Champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) decides to up his publicity, he offers an unknown 'a shot at the title', with the assumption that America is the land of opportunity. As fate has it, he picks Rocky, a boxer who has virtually no chance of winning.
The story then focuses upon Rocky's preparations to the big fight, with confrontations with his manager Mick (a magnificent Burgess Merideth) and Paulie (Burt Young), the brother to his new girlfriend Adrian (Talia Shire).
I have encountered some finales through the years watching films, but this needs to be my favourite. Everything comes together - Bill Conti's breathtaking soundtrack, the realistic fight scene, and of coarse, above anything else, Rocky's heart to go the distance. It really has to be seen.
Whats the DVD like I hear you screaming. The picture is crisp, and doesn't even compare with the VHS release (which I felt was terrible). I adore the soundtrack in Rocky, and it has never sounded better than it does here. You'll be humming your way through the training montages!
As for the Special Features, you have an in depth interview with Stallone, which is both humourous and interesting. There's a tribute to the late Burgess Meredith, which in my opinion proves how good an actor that man was. There's trailers for all the Rocky pictures and a famous hidden easter egg worth checking out.
This is simply a DVD which goes into the 'Must Have' category. It proved at the Oscars of 1976 how good it was, coming away with The Best Picture (ahead of the likes of Taxi Driver). Although John Avilsen directed, Rocky in my opinion belongs richly to Stallone. Not many actors could portray Rocky like Stallone did and he pushed the production with his own will. Please do yourself a favour, spend some of your hard earned cash, get this DVD, and cheer on Rocky like never before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocky - A truely gripping 5 films, 21 Nov 2003
If you are still unsure whether or not to buy this DVD Box-set then let me put your mind at set, BUY IT!!! These brilliant Stallone films show you how courage and commitmnent can pay off with excellent results. Stallone stars as Rocky Balboa an Italian/American living in Philadelphia with hardly any income and an amateur boxer.

Rocky: Begins with background info to Rocky's life in the slums of Philadelphia, when World Heavyweight Champion Apollo Creeds opponent pulls out of a bout, the champ selects Rocky as his opponent because of his Italian Stallian nickname. Rocky agrees to the fight and under some good training by trainer Mickey prepares for the fight, whilst meeting his new girlfriend Adrian. This film is my 4th favourite in the series as it drags on for quite a while in the first hour.

Rocky II: After the prestigous first encounter, Rocky retires and marries Adrian, at first life is good as he has made a fortune and quickly spends it on luxuries. Things turn bad for him when he struggles to find a job and the money runs out, while Rocky is struggling Apollo is being mocked by people for the fioght and is getting frustrated, he provokes Rocky into a rematch which Rocky accepts despite Adrians plea's because of his battered eye. Brilliant training sequence including the "proper" 118-118 advert run and a quick prayer before the bout to put his mind at rest sets up a fight which matches the the 1 from the first film. This is my 3rd favourite in the series.

Rocky III: Now World Champ and 10 successful title defences, Rocky faces Clubber Lang in which will be his most difficult test up to date. When Mickey dies of a heart-attack and under pressure from the hostile press and public, its former rival Apollo Creed who agrees to train Rocky up for the bout. This is just my favourite of the films because of the excellent opening sequence showing his title defences to the theme of "eye of the tiger" and then a great training sequence which shows Rocky train in Apollo's backyard.

Rocky IV: When new Russian boxer Ivan Drago arrives in America, no-body expects him to make a big impact. This is until he shows off his hi-tech training centre and fights Apollo where he Kills him in under 2 rounds. Rocky, feeling hurt and guilty for Apollos death goes to Russia to fight the gigantic Russian in front of a hostile crowd, after what is surely Rocky's most intense work out in the freezing conditions of the Russian mountains. This is my 2nd favourite film because of the excellent soundtrack throughout the films and training sequence.

Rocky V: Despite many bad reviews i still believe this is still worth watching. Now retired and suffered brain damage, Rocky returns home from Russia to a hero's reception, but Paulie has blown Rocky's fortne and the former boxer must sell all of his assets and return to his previous neighbourhood seen in the 1st Rocky film. He reopens Mickey's former gym and finds a young talent in Tommy Gunn, Gunn becomes a success but Rocky begins to neglect his child and struggles balancing the 2 together in his life, Gunn betrays Rocky and signs a deal with a promoter who is ponly intrested in seeing Rocky fight again, the finalie of the series ends in Rocky and Gunn exchanging Blows in a hardcore street fight. Unfortunately this is not as good as the other films and has to be 5th in order.

Finally there is the special features, nothing special but a helpful booklet telling you information and the usual original trailors used are something intresting to see.
Still unsure to buy it? Then all i can say is Wonderful story-lines and great training scenes that will make you want to work out for the rest of your life is a great incentive to buy.
