Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Bleakly beautiful, filled with longing and haunting melodies, Blue For The Most is a mesmerising album. With a voice of fragile innocence and backing tracks imbued with cinematic atmospheres and supremely languid beats, the debut full-length studio album from Sussex's Abraham, aka sultry singer Rachel Cuming, sounds like Dido produced by Zero 7 and Goldfrapp. The tenderly seductive "Magpie", "What Gives With You" and "City For Us", country tinged laments rolling to deep, down-tempo funk grooves, sweeping strings and watery electronica, are all as effortlessly brooding as they are gorgeous. Meanwhile the dark orchestration and claustrophobic computer noise that drives dark odes "Start the Song Backwards" and "Heather" are up there with the most chilling film scores. Yet there's an ever-present sensuality and optimism that makes everything here completely enchanting. As the smouldering title track illustrates, Abraham's hazy charms are too hopeful to be trip hop, and--with the tingling romance of lullaby "Ever So Slowly" proving the point--too ingenious to be dubbed just another chillout album. --Dan Gennoe

5.0 out of 5 stars This will remain on my deck for a long time, 5 Feb 2006
By R Banner (Rubery, West Mids United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have just 'discovered' Abraham, and what a find! The smoky singing style reminds me a bit of Sam Brown ('Stop' and currently with Jools Holland) and, with the amazing haunting melodies and unusual lyrics, has been on, and remains on, my CD deck and shows no sign of moving.

4.0 out of 5 stars Often Beautiful - Quirky and Cool, 22 Jan 2003
By A Customer
This music sits somewhere between Mandalay, Sarah McLachlan and Beth Orton. Quirky arrangements, thoughtful production create a very unique sound.

Comparisons with Goldfrapp would be misleading, as this album does not have the cohesive, cinematic quality of Felt Mountain. However, the pattern of melodic female vocals over "interesting" instrumentation does exist here, and has echoes of material by Goldfrapp, Mandalay, Mono (whose only album Formica Blues must be the epitome of this style and reaches levels that few others achieve), Violet Indiana, Blue States at al.

Great listening overall, should definitely be experienced late at night.

5.0 out of 5 stars All of the buildings are lit up like fireworks..., 18 Dec 2002
By A. Knibb "alexknibb" (Bristol, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Phew, what a corker.

It's not often you get real 'growers' these days, but this is one and no mistake. I've had it in my car now for about three months straight, and I'm not getting bored of it yet.

There are three main stand out features of this album. Firstly, and perhaps obviously, the songwriting. Each of the songs are wonderfully subtle and are lyrically equivalent to something you'd expect from Moloko if they ever calmed down. Secondly, the production is second to none. The beats and clipped samples are appropriately used and seem to fit around Rachel's voice like the packaging around my last amazon.co.uk purchase. Finally, the diva's voice herself. It's sultry, smooth and wonderfully playful in places.

This CD is closest, AURALLY, to Dido, but to compare the two would be absurd and an insult to these guys. This is a million miles further down the road and, unlike Dido's offering, will stand repeated listening well.

One of the worst albums I ever bought - albeit for £2.00. An utterly insipid, bland, flatly-produced mismashed hogwash of aural nothingness. Read more
