Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It can't be said too often that music is one of the best bridges between the West and the Arab world: the 11 singers featured in Arabia: The Women's Voice are ambassadors for peace. And in the case of Oum Kalthoum, even across Arab-Israeli battle lines. Her strong, pure tones conclude this collection, which begins with the present and then works chronologically backwards. We get a plethora of singers backed by furious electro effects, but what strikes you is the way their voices remain quintessentially Arabic. That dusky, lazy tone, which so often lingers microtonally below the note, seems impervious to extraneous influences. As we go back in time, the accompaniments become simpler and more engaging: massed strings in unison, plus an accordion or a lute or a zither. My favourites are Nagat Al Saghira, who was a child-star of Egyptian cinema in the 1940s, and the great Lebanese singer Fairouz. Nobody has ever successfully replicated her deep, dark timbre and it seems doubtful that anyone ever will. --Michael Church

4.0 out of 5 stars Expand your horizons!, 27 Feb 2002
By zavebe "zavebe" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This CD is a wonderful introduction to an area of music not so often heard in the West. Bollywood tunes and bhangra might be starting to make their way into the mainstream but Arabic music is still largely unknown.

It's a collection that features the latest sounds from the Lebanon and Cairo (Najwa Karam or Dania who has worked with Transglobal Underground) to some real classics featuring the words of Kahlil Gibran and that instantly recognisable Arabic string sound. 1960s to 00s. Classical to club beats second to none.

What's particularly wonderful about this collection is that it breaks down a lot of preconceptions about what goes on in Arabic culture. These are strong women with great voices.

Expand your horizons. Step outside what you know. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful compilation of styles, 10 Mar 2005
By D. Gallagher "Dee" (Blackpool UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I discovered middle eastern music a few years ago through an interest in belly dance. This album is a delightful compilation of styles from modern to more classical style singers. The recording is also, in my opinion, a statement of the importance of the female voice in arabic music.

It starts with the modern and the internationally acclaimed Najwa Karam followed by the stylish voice of Nawal Al Zouchbi. Each recording is a little older including more classical styles with rich orchestrations. The oldest recording is from Oum Kaltoum but my favourite track is from Egypt's Nagat. Her voice has a unique quality; delicate, warm and sensual. I would buy 'Arabia' for this track alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music from the Soul, 5 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I confess to ordering this CD because firstly it was inexpensive and secondly I liked the cover! However from the moment track one began I was transfixed. Each of the artistes sings as if the music comes right from the soul and even though I don't speak Arabic I found it made me feel so emotional. I thought tracks 3,4 and 5 had an Indian feel to them, which brought a new slant to my Middle Eastern music collection and I found Nagat on Track 9 a beautiful and haunting experience! Highly recommended.
