Synopsis

Acclaimed author Roddy Doyle teams up with first-time feature director Kieron J. Walsh for WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY, a charming romantic comedy about an unlikely relationship that forms between a Dublin schoolteacher and a free-spirited woman with a hidden profession. Brendan (Peter McDonald) spends his off hours watching old movies and singing in a local choir. One night, he meets Trudy (Flora Montgomery) in a pub, and they agree to meet at the cinema later that week. When Trudy stands Brendan up, he tracks her down; surprisingly, a serious relationship develops. Things take a turn for the strange and bizarre when Brendan begins to suspect Trudy's nocturnal adventures might have to do with a series of violent castrations that have struck the city. Confronting her, he instead learns that Trudy is a professional burglar, which shocks him into even greater confusion. After convincing him to help her rob his sister's house, Brendan finds himself falling quite easily into a life of crime. A final daring heist of the new computers at Brendan's school finally brings the happy days to an end, but this does not dampen the film's persistently cheerful tone. Doyle's unpredictable script, combined with a bouncy pop soundtrack, makes Walsh's big-screen debut a lighthearted, engaging affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny & tender, 1 April 2002
By A Customer
If you enjoyed Roddy Doyle's other films, you'll love this one. Full of fun and some wry asides on the Celtic tiger economy, it's a romantic comedy that can be appreciated by both sexes.
It's a crying shame that films like this don't get the distribution they deserve. Who needs another High School teen horror when you can watch something as intelligent and charming as this?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great off-beat comedy, 25 Jun 2006

Shy, opera singing, movie-buff school teacher Brendan falls for the brash in-yer-face blonde Trudy who turns out to be a burglar. Which is a relief for him as he suspects her of being the masked female castrating vigilante who is attacking men. Slowly he turns away from his old stuffy persona to using Iggy Pop to illustrate his school lessons. Oh come on Brendan sing the Penis song again. Some good movie trivia plants from the obvious visual tributes mainly to A Bout De Souffle from the first film poster onward to more subtle tilts at Once Upon a Time in the West and many others, just freeze-frame the sign outside the cinema and who does not want to see Oskar von Hamme in Remedial Action, as well as a longer version of Flora Montgomery in the Song of Bernadette.
When he finds she is a thief Brendan even helps Trudy out, comically robbing a model village and its inhabitants and refusing to make love until the exhibits have had their faces turned away from him.
You must see this at least once.

3.0 out of 5 stars Indulging in Dublinia - When Brendan met...Adam, 12 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Some people might find this film a bit disappointing: in spite of the excellent performances of the entire cast, the story never seems to get in gear and really grasp its audience.
That said, 'When Brendan Met Trudy' still has a lot to offer. There are many amusing scenes and some instances of great dialogue. Above all, 'When Brendan' will appeal to people who are familiar with Dublin. Some jokes definitely only make sense to an Irish audience!
This film is a fascinating counterpart to 'About Adam', which came out in the same year and depicts Dublin as it would perhaps like to be seen: from its young, trendy, affluent and cosmopolitan side.
'When Brendan' brings us back to Roddy Doyle's Dublin right from the wonderful opening shot.
It is a small film, not as easily exportable as 'About Adam' and not as fresh, but it is a gem for those who like to indulge in Dublinia.
