Amazon.co.uk Review
In the world of F1 racing games, Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix series has long been the benchmark by which other games are measured. Grand Prix 4 is an evolution, rather than revolution of the series, but still has plenty to offer.

If you are unfamiliar to the phenomenon of the Grand Prix series, then you are in for a treat. This simulation provides all you could hope for as an F1 fan, with a game engine legendary for combining a realistic driving experience with an enjoyable and accessible game. The most notable addition to the series since GP3 has been an overhaul of the graphics, which are truly sumptuous, but also incredibly demanding.

The game will run on a PII 400 Mhz with options turned down, but even on a PIII 800 MHz, with a GeForce 3 graphics card it limped along at 8fps with all the settings on. However, once you have struck a balance between frame rates and graphic detail, you are in for a racing treat. The cars drive superbly and all the tracks have been mapped using GPS data for supreme accuracy.

The pit crews are now fully 3-D modelled and the opposition cars are smart, looking to block your overtaking moves, without risking accidents. All this takes place in a world where dynamic weather conditions are in place, so you can find yourself having to stop half way through a race and switch from dry to wet tyres, in order to compete. The in-game menus have also been radically improved.

There are still some flaws, which regulars of the series will be disappointed to find haven't been addressed. No safety cars, no proper stop/go penalties, no restarts and opposition cars making poor use of qualifying windows. The season data is also still a year out, with 2001 drivers and cars included in the game. This is compounded by the likes of EA's F1 2002 having made great strides forward and now being a worthy rival to the king of racing sims.

Grand Prix 4 hasn't made enough advances for GP3 owners to find this an obvious upgrade, especially those who already opted for the GP3 2000 add-on. However, if your PC has the power, it is worth it for the updated graphics, which give you an absolutely stunning ride around the streets of Monaco. If you are new to the F1 racing genre, then a copy of Grand Prix 4 plus a copy of EA's F1 2002, will provide ultimate satisfaction. If you're budget will only stretch to one of these titles, it's now a very close call. --Jason Weston

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly realistic..., 26 Aug 2003
By A. P. Ryan - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To start with, Grand Prix 4 has undoubtedly some of the best graphics I've ever seen in a driving game. The cars are all modelled with a high level of accuracy, and the racetracks are all exactly as they would be in real life. All the drivers, teams and tracks from 2001 are included, and the pit crews will actually change the wheels, unlike in some games. You can also adapt the difficulty of driving by enablling or disabling nine different driver aids, from automatic brakes to launch control, meaning even a rookie can finish a race.

NOW THE BAD NEWS!

This game is seriously bug-ridden. I have a high-spec computer (Athlon XP 1700, 512MB RAM, NVidia GeForce 3 128MB, 60Gb Hard Drive), and yet GP4 constantly crashes to desktop for absolutely no reason. It gets extremely annoying, especially when you're one lap from the end of a race, only for you to be staring at your desktop again.

Also, for some utterly bizarre reason Geoff Crammond made all the default setups with SEVERE understeer. If you disable steering help completely in the Controls section, you will not make any of the corners. This means that you will NEVER get as quick a lap time as the other cars. If you alter the setup to try and counter the understeer, you will invariably spin off. I have tried and tried, but it is almost impossible to get a truly neutral setup.

The pit stops can become strange as well: if you lose a nose cone, for example, when they change the nose you will gain a brand new nose on your car, only for that to be removed and ANOTHER one stuck on instead! There has also been the odd case where the suspension is being repaired (a bit unrealistic there!) and they don't put another wheel on. This is rare, but very strange nonetheless.

Damage is also slightly worrying in terms of realism. If you get a puncture, your car immediately slows down and stops, without any visible damage to the tyre, and as mentioned above you can lose a whole wheel, suspension and all, and still get another one stuck on in the pits. Then there's the retiring itself: you cannot withdraw from races at all, even if you're in last with no hope of finishing, and when you pull off the track, your driver cannot get out of the car, even when the engine is billowing smoke and flame! If they are making a Grand Prix 5, they really need to address these problems, as they are rather obscure.

Finally, the penalty system employed is laughable. If you cut a corner, you are given an immediate black flag (which in real life means disqualification!) and you slow down to about 70mph. If there is a huge accident, there are no safety cars, and I have NEVER seen a red flag used, even with the largest of accidents. There are also no drive-through or stop-and-go penalties, which prove that despite FIA approval, the GP4 team do not understand the penalty system at all.

All in all, this is a pretty unrealistic game, and despite numerous advances in graphics and motion-capture, I was disappointed when I played this. If you are a serious GP fan, you will still buy it, but for the rest of us, it may be a good idea to consider other games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grand Prix 4 The f1 fans holy grail, 2 Jul 2003
Grand prix 4 is set in the 2001 Formula One season which is a handicap because a few of the circuits changed in 2002. Despite this, GP4 remains the best F1 simulation game for all diehard fans.
The game is very technical and the player must have some knowledge of formula one before you can just start playing it. You must set your car up for the track to find the best possible performance for the certain circuit. This is difficult and enjoyable at the same time.
The graphics are very detailed and all the cars are exactly as they were in 2001. The tracks are also superbly modelled, with every kerb in place and grandstands buzzing with fans on qualifying and race day. Also a new feature is an animated pit crew, which does everything needed, if a touch slow!
I suggest that you do 100% race distance with pit strategy etc. This brings out the best in the games AI, as other drivers crash and make pit stops and they will try to pass you and defend their position, even forcing you off the track in some cases!
For the ultimate experience you must have a steering wheel and pedals to play this game with. I think this has set the benchmark for F1 simulations for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Daddy of GP games, 24 Jun 2002
By D. A. Watson (Basingstoke,Hants) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Geoff Crammond is without doubt a genius. The sheer brilliance of this game is hard to put into words, but the vast improvement over GP3 is huge. The graphics have loads of options, including heat haze which although a nice idea, doesn't really work. The drivers AI is totally convincing and wheel to wheel battles are now quite common. If you have a force feedback wheel you are in for a treat. For the first time I can remember the wheel reacts according to the forces being put on the car. On the straights it lightens, whilst the resistance increases into corners. The sounds are improved, the replays still the best and the tuning / tweaking options are still there. The whole package is so good that you won't want another F1 game until GP5 is released. Its far more fun than watching the real thing and the in helmet view is a really clever touch. Try it and you will see what I mean.
