As a guy who has always dabbled at best with real Americana, folk and country music, I am always on the look out for the good collections and best ofs... rather than trying to collect an artists entrie works.

Hence, whilst looking for a good Johnny Cash collection, I cam across this album at quite a reasonable price. The track listing comtains most of the songs I am familiar with, only missing one or two I've heard on other collections, and seemed to be a good first cut of JC's catalog.

However, one feature of the album has put me off really loving this collection, and that being the censoring of certain words ! Especially odd when you consider what is left uncensored in other modern albums of our time. The bleep's in "boy named Sue" and other tracks just seem really out of place, and ruin the otherwise energetic fire of the live recordings. I'll be looking out for another compilation, and making sure it has a "parent advisory warning" on it

Unfortunately, "A Boy Called Sue" gets bleeped, which is distracting in the middle of a live recording. Sony/Columbia get no marks for trying to make a collection of Cash songs kid-friendly.

Being only 19 I'm not going to be as picky and loyal to the classics of Cash as those who have known his music for longer, and this is the only complete album I own of the man. But the music on here is top-notch and is, from doing a bit of research, probably one of if not the best collection of his classic hits.

There is of course the issue of the censoring - but the way these reviewers are going on they'd make it sound as if there's several bleeps throughout the album - the actual truth is that out of the two discs which pack in a whopping 36 songs there's only ONE incident of a bleep and that's on "A Boy Named Sue". How that spoils an entire album of great country Cash music is a bit hard to believe - sure it would have been BETTER if that bleep wasn't there but it's not as if the sound quality all through all 36 songs is terrible and crackly - in fact it's very crisp and clear.

My favourite of the two discs is by far Disc 2 - all my favourites from the album (bar Ring of Fire) are on that disc, from the hilarious "The One On the Right is On the Left" and "A Boy Named Sue", and I'm a particular fan of his more mellow recordings including "Sunday Morning Comind Down", "Highwayman" (which has four verses sung by a different singer each) and "The Wanderer" all of which have very atmospheric and evocative music going on in the background.

A fine collection in my humble-not-so-well-versed-in-cash opinion.
