Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The follow-up to his 1999 solo album Zooma, The Thunderthief is a soaring testimony to the former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones' multi instrumental prowess. His label boss, Robert Fripp, adds his unmistakable anguished guitar to the opening "Leafy Meadows", but mostly Jones steers the album playing guitars, basses, mandolins, autoharp, koto, ukulele and keyboards. He covers a wide stylistic range from the Cockney voiced punk pastiche "Angry Angry" to the back to nature musing of "Ice Fishing at Night". The pulverising "Shibuya Bop" highlights his mastery as an arranger and the closing "Freedom Song" is a consummate blend of English and traditional Japanese influences. Led Zep fans and admirers of intelligent prog rock will find their curiosity handsomely rewarded. --Gavin Martin

CD Description
This solo offering from former Zep man John Paul Jones comes to you courtesy of Robert Fripp's DGM label, and it's not difficult to see why the King Crimson guitarist feels a sense of simpatico with Jones. Much of the material here echoes not only the more artful sounds Jones explored with latter-day Led Zeppelin, but moreover the visceral blend of art-rockand heavy riffs that King Crimson began perfecting in the mid-'70s. In fact, Fripp makes a blistering guest appearance on the appropriately thundering lead-off cut "Leafy Meadows". Jones plays the lion's share of the instruments here, but he chooses his partners well; art-rock cult hero Peter Blegvad contributes lyrics and cover art. The piano ballad "Ice Fishing at Night" provides something of a respite, suggestingthe quieter moments of Jack Bruce's early solo work, but the bulk of THE THUNDERTHIEF is given over to powerful guitar and keyboard motifs and of course masterfully throbbing basslines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been a long time since I rock 'n' rolled!, 22 April 2002
By A Customer
I bought John Paul Jones' new album "The Thunderthief" the other day - expecting great things after what a pal said about his previous effort, "Zooma". Well chums, I have to say I certainly am NOT disappointed. This is as fine an album as you'll come across in a month of Sundays, with as many superb tracks on it as you can shake a drumstick at! Check out the rifferama of the title track and the Irish reel-like "Shibuya Bop" with Jones' bass taking the place of the fiddle! Robert Fripp throws in a blistering solo or two, and shout at yourself with the emotive "Angry Angry". The simplistic, almost child-like lyrics of "Ice Fishing at Night" belie the almost zen-like quality of its import, whilst the final track sees Jones playing solo mandolin whist intoning a bluesy "Freedom Song" for the common man.
Delicious! I bet Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wish they were on it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The power behind the thrones, 20 Nov 2006
By Stephen Rogers (Totnes, Devon, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Of all the music made by the three survivors of Led Zeppelin, only John Paul Jones' seems still to contain the same fire that made Zep special. The bass is very heavy, with the fat, harpsichord-like sound of the 8-string reminiscent of "Presence" but much stronger and clearer. This is a very powerful album, and features one of Robert Fripp's greatest ever guitar contributions in "Leafy Meadows". For Fripp fans, this track is almost worth the price alone and really makes me wonder what a Fripp/Jones band would be like. For any Zep fan disappointed with Page & Plant's failure to match up to their godlike past, this is a nice surprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with each listening, 8 Jan 2004
By Bob (England) - See all my reviews
This album is very eclectic ... lots for different styles and musical textures from hard atonal Crimsonesque rock to gentle ballady and fun stuff. It grows on you the more you listen to it. I thought a few tracks were quite King Crimson influenced (Fripp plays on the first track anyway and the album was produced by Fripp) and some seemed a bit of a dig (at Led Zep maybe?).

I'd certainly recommend this album to anyone. It's quite progressive compared to the straighter rock of Led Zep but also has intelligence and humour running through it.
